I recently got one after going almost 20 years without one. Yes, they're incredible, but I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.
Maybe it's because I feel like I'm clinging to the past. The CRTs will one day go out and it will gradually become harder and harder to find a replacement. Meanwhile, if an LCD or OLED goes out, you can just buy a new one. I don't know. It just isn't the same as playing one back in the day.

This is exactly why i got rid of most of my retro stuff. The closer i got to the "authentic" experience the more i realized it was impossible to recreate and just made me sad.

I feel that. A few years ago I got a SNES Mini. Played through my childhood games and a bunch of others I had never played, like Chrono Trigger. Had an absolute blast.

After the CRT scene started to get popular, I went back out and got another one. Then I got another PS2 + games. The games looked better and smoother, but as with you, I also felt sad. It felt lonely, like everyone moved on and I'm stuck in the past. I never questioned it when playing my SNES Mini. I was having fun and not thinking about CRT at all.

Not him, but it isn't necessarily that they'll go out soon. It's that whenever they actually do, you can't just go to Best Buy and get a new one. It's a piece of technology that's on the way out.

They're already near impossible to find if you live in a western sºy metro city. But they are abundant in third world shit holes and will continue to be. Maybe in the future retro gamers will have to import from there

I never understood the playing the game as the devs intended meme. No one had ever brought up evidence for this in the form of interviews with old console devs or design notes. It's all head canon based on speculation.

Same, kind of. I do think there's truth there, but not as much as some make it seem. If CRTs didn't exist, would the sprites look different because the devs want them to be seen differently on an LCD? I doubt it.

There's only so much they can do with pixel art, and plus LCD screens were on Game Boy systems. The pixel art doesn't look any different on there.

They'll probably be fine, even in the unlikely scenario where the transformer has gone bad the worst that will happen is you'll hear a pop and see the magic smoke escape, and then it won't turn on anymore. I've grabbed several CRTs off the side of the road and never had any problems with them blowing up on me.
Regardless though, it's always a good idea to take some precautions when turning on old untested electronics for the first time. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, keep it away from anything that's flammable, and use a power strip or something else that lets you turn the outlet on or off from a safe distance.

You'll wish you never had a CRT TV by the time you hit mid-life, when even trying to lift a yorkshire terrier is enough to make your lower back spasm in pain.

ive had a few crts over the past few years and i honestly prefer lcds
sure rgb into a crt looks great but the eyestrain and worst of all the whining noise is just not worth it

CRTs are objectively superior.

I keep mine because I just like light gun games and the two I have still work great so why bother getting rid of a perfectly fine piece of tech?

But it does? Same goes even for GBA, NDS. The older consoles had no back light and poor color representation, so usually the brightness and color/saturation values of those would differ wildly over home console versions because the old LCDs were absolute dogshit.
An actual example, Final Fight arcade vs. the GBA port. Ignore the different horizontal resolution (because GBA had fucking retarded aspect ratio) but you can instantly notice that all colors have about 10% higher brightness value than the arcade original.
Another example, first GBA Castlevania game, CotM, had most of its sprites ripped from PS1 SoTN, but because they mostly weren't altered, then it looked too dark and muddy on the screen. All later CV games had pretty much a neon bright color palette in comparison for better visibility.
If those are not clear cut examples of devs adjusting their sprite work to accommodate specific screen specifications then I don't know what to tell you.
And similar examples apply to CRTs, color blending, fake transparency effects etc. were a common technique.

The thing you're forgetting is a CRT monitor is not the same thing as a CRT television.
VGA is a really good video signal so you won't get the composite artifacts that people claim are necessary to play old console games the correct way.

I feel like it's just now finally getting to the point where you don't really need a crt for games to look "right". The issue is it's very expensive to do it without one.
4k OLED monitor with a good 120hz+ refresh rate (so as to use black frame insertion on 60fps games) and a good upscaler with a CRT filter and you can have the look and feel on a modern screen.
But that shit starts to get expensive and I don't want to bother buying a new scaler right now or an OLED TV since my non-oled 4k is still good.

Your example shows brighter colors, but in the end it's the same sprite.

If you are sincerely having fun, then I do not think you should stress too hard about being stuck in the past. Have fun playing games, and invest as you wish to engross yourself in it more.

I have a thinkpad x220 with vga. You can use an old computer to get vga to component. I'm trying it in 2 weeks but from my research it's the same as connecting a console to a CRT in terms of lack of input lag.

Currently I turn my laptop sideways and play shmups vertically on the built in display. It's an lcd so this introduces some lag (or so I've heard) but the games look better than on an hdtv and are playable like this

Those feelings are on you buddy. I play on my CRT to get the best out of my old systems. If I wanted to play like I used to I would go get a shitty Zenith TV with a built in VCR and play on Composite. As far as them going bad, yeah it'll happen one day, just take care of it for as long as you can. There's also niche repair services you can pay for to get them fixed or attempt to get them fixed. Sometimes it works perfectly fine but it's just something stupid like the caps need to be swapped out.

You can but it takes some steps to achieve.
-You need to install CRT Emudriver that makes the GPU output a 15khz signal that an old CRT can accept
-You need a way to physically attach the GPU to the TV, and output a signal without molesting/changing/convering it. That's called a Transcoder.

Once you do that, it's amazing and you won't need any old hardware/FPGA crap ever again.

Motion blur is still a huge problem.
120hz + BFI etc doesn't fix it. They just reduce it slightly. And it also introduces a whole swag of new problems.

I use one hooked up to a PC to emulate games.
A transcoder has no input lag at all (there is no conversion process happening at all which is what causes the lag in those cheap converters in the first place).

Plus a lot of people use their old consoles, or even those RPIs/FPGA things with a CRT.

Fairly tough, but nothing painful.

While it's true CRTs have better motion clarity, why does everyone act like it's a gigantic night and day difference? Of course it depends on the game, but most games look fine on an LCD.

My current CRT setup:

XBR960 widescreen CRT for Switch/Wii U + niche retro consoles

36" Sony KV36FV310 for Saturn + Dreamcast

Ikegami PVM for modded Wii/PS2

Commodore 1702 for Analogue NT Mini Noir

Other smaller models like "microwave TV" for VHS.

I still use my OLED for PS5/Xbox.Using a CRT brings me joy.
