Flamewars have existed since forever and will keep existing, but the split between japanese and western game design is such that the flamewars are stale, because each public values and hates widely different things.
Flamewars in separate boards would be different as in, instead of western fans complaining about a japanese game's graphics or benchmarking while the japanese fans complain the western game isn't coomy and colorful enough, we'd get Persona fans complaining DQ doesn't have depth, while DQ fans joke about how Persona fans haven't played 1 and 2. Those more in-depth personal flamewars are more fun, give a deeper insight into each game, and are why cookiefags and miyazakifags threads about fighting over Souls X Ninja Gaiden are more fun than JRPG X WRPG threads.
