i still have my phat DS original from 2005. and the plastic falls apart. All around the corners of the lower portion is chipped into big holes and the hinge is cracked all the way through. The chassis seems ok, the buttons, screens and speakers all still feel just as good as they were 20 years ago and i was pretty careful with my console, most of the damage just somehow happened in storage. You can replace the cases but its a fair bit more effort than a gameboy would need
As far as comfortability i like the original fat ds's but those XL ones they came out with a few years later seems much better for adult hands and the graphics were a little less chonky looking and theyre backwards compaitable i think. Too bad theres no more GBA slot so thats the only reason youd go for an original DS since theyre more comfortable than the GBA SP and Micro while still having a nice backlit screen
