was this original ds really that bad?
it looks more comfortable than the lite and dsi, but which one is more durable?

apparently the later models have support for brightness settings they just dont have the firmware option
you can flash them and get significantly brighter screens

ds and dsi are about the same, the lite's hinges were prone to cracking

i just wanted to buy a ds lite but the ones without a broken hinge are more rare and expensive. it's such a common issue that it's obvious it just wasn't made well

I used my clamshell launch DS till I got a 3DS desu

They just look like shit. They took the very worst of late 80s Japanese electronics aesthetics. The DS Lite and DSi went for more of a Japanese flip phone aesthetic of the time and it was much better.

Nope, phat DS was the best, I still use my red one, I did have to change the screens a few years ago and the battery, but its still going strong.

I used the original for a few years before I got the Lite. The DS Lite isn't as comfy to hold but the screen is significantly better. It's brighter and has more colorful colors. The DSi has a better screen than both but feels about the same to hold as the DS Lite, maybe just slightly less comfy.

I had the opposite experience; my lite looks far better then my DSi. Maybe because region differences since my DSi is jap but then again a couple of my lites are also jap and still look better

i still have my phat DS original from 2005. and the plastic falls apart. All around the corners of the lower portion is chipped into big holes and the hinge is cracked all the way through. The chassis seems ok, the buttons, screens and speakers all still feel just as good as they were 20 years ago and i was pretty careful with my console, most of the damage just somehow happened in storage. You can replace the cases but its a fair bit more effort than a gameboy would need

As far as comfortability i like the original fat ds's but those XL ones they came out with a few years later seems much better for adult hands and the graphics were a little less chonky looking and theyre backwards compaitable i think. Too bad theres no more GBA slot so thats the only reason youd go for an original DS since theyre more comfortable than the GBA SP and Micro while still having a nice backlit screen

ds lite in my experience has worse backlight bleed and viewing angles
also it has a decent amount of ghosting

I'd say it's pretty good, especially if you mod a capture device to it.
DSiXL is a bit better, only because my boomer ass wants to see text better.
I hate the DS lite solely because of it's mushy buttons.
