Depends on what you mean by "playable." If you're expecting it to run smooth on a 2015 toaster, lol no. But if you've got semi-modern specs and don’t mind a few jank bugs here and there, it’s fine. Still a bit rough in spots but totally beatable.

Was maintaining 90fps at 2k with DLSS set to quality, all high settings. Specs are 5080 Super and 9800x3D. Some crashes after using specific grenades in groups of enemies, but otherwise fine. After the most recent update though I'm dropping to 55-60fps with frequent crashes when traveling between world zones. I don't know how they did it, but the game is less optimized for me

I recommend picking Lilith as a character, because her ability allows to travel around much faster and skip enemies. BL1 has a lot of filler content and empty space. Zombie dlc is also tedious to complete.

It just means that is what their skill tress contain. Amon's skill treess are fire and ice so he is labeled the fire and ice guy. Vex is literally everything because she has a special kinetic status effect and she has a skill that changes its element to whatever she has equipped.

Her green tree starts getting good once you get the augment that drops balls on kills and she can just start maintaining 100% skill uptime during hordes. Then once she gets the health draining capstone you just never stop mashing the button since the cooldown is removed and it's just a giant orb that floats through terrain.

Running it 5600x 3080, Running it very high, volumetric fog disabled, ray tracing enabled, 1440p DLSS balanced. Get 55-60fps, occasional drop into 45fps, not that noticeable with freesync. Set everything to lowest and slapped on DLSS.

Standing still i get like 80 FPS.

When I'm walking I get a big stutter like every 10 sec

When I'm fighting like every 3 sec

Dropped down to 20 fps then I refunded

With these settings it looks way worse then Borderlands 3 and runs way worse as well

After the 1.02 patch yes, for me at least, getting 60 at basically all times at 1080p now outside of a few areas in the Northeast section near Callis' arena where it dips a little. I'm pretty sure these retards shipped the game with r.OneFrameThreadLag enabled and that patch was simply disabling it.

Borderlands would be better if I could run around with 3 AI companions that I could level and select their perks/equipment

Vex, specced entirely into passive (non-kill skill) Kinetic skills in the Incarnate tree (+5 of the Kinetic first tier kinetic skill from the red tree) then use any Looming Dullahan shotgun. As long as you aren't retarded and can aim for consistent crits you will melt absolutely everything.

Also, Vex has a skill augment where using her orb power during Incarnate will refill her gun magazine, this also applies to Ordinance weapons, which are intended to be 1 magazine, cooldown restricted weapons that are insanely powerful. So you can get around 3-5 full magazines of Ordinance weapon damage out per single cooldown. This utterly destroys shit, I suspect this will be nerfed to not reload Ordinance guns in the first patch.

Ive had to change from auto detect best settings to eventually tweaking down all settings to low over the course of my complete campaign run. It crashes all the time just opening the inventory menu. It won't load other zones for minutes if going by foot/motor cycle
Enemies will shoot through walls, I fall through floors at least once per dungeon. Checkpoints will get remarked as undiscovered if I exit the game during a play session. Audio fucks up when multiple guns are being shot and enemies are yelling their quips. Fps drops to single digits in high screen effect attacks with lots of calculations like amon's lifesteal onslaughter effects.

I'm a level 22 green Amon and the only skill point that noticeably made me stronger is the one that makes my Cryo Axe freeze on hit. That shit is godlike. Almost every weapon I find feels like shit to fire which is a problem I think I only had in the first Borderlands. I found 3 different legendaries and they were all worse than the Vladof SMG (that was lower level than the legendaries) that keeps dropping for me that's alright to use.

I'm getting strong Diablo 4 vibes here where I was bored until the uniques started to drop which changed my build significantly in that game and made it interesting to play instead of a slog.

Want to know the secret to why BL4 runs so badly? It's actually more complex than you think. It's not just any one setting or design choice. It's Gearbox failing to adhere to the basic, important game development premise of software lock in. BL4 is running on UE 5.5.4, this is a version released in March this year. This means Gearbox was upgrading the engine and transitioning the project repeatedly during development to the newest engine version. Every UE5 major version release generally heavily modifies or outright deprecates and replaces thousands and thousands of functions across basically every feature. Taking a project up a single version, from liek 5.1 to 5.2 can add weeks or even months of fixing everything you've already made. Gearbox has done this probably multiple times, and in that final release did it only 6 months prior to the games retail release.

This is a disaster to deal with, hence why most UE5 games releasing today are still on version 5.1 or 5.2, because that's the version that was released at the time development of the games started, and was therefore locked in. This is why STALKER 2 needs 8+ months just to upgrade the engine version once post-release

THIS is why BL4 is such a mess, it's likely built on mountains of broken shit caused by multiple project upgrades they could never completely fix in time for the next inevitable upgrade and eventual release.

Because this has basically always been Epics development style, this was exactly how UE4 and UE3 updates worked as well. They are the gaming studio version of the "Move fast and break things" mentality of progress. They don't hide this fact, they state all over their documentation to not upgrade your production environments between engine versions unless it's absolutely necessary, and if you must to do it in sequence (never skip a version, if you're going from 5.1.1 to 5.4.1 then upgrade the project to every version in between since the development tools can sometimes have compensations built in to automatically fix small things for you from the previous version). Before patch 1.02 basically saved my FPS back to 60 (on all Medium unfortunately) when I got into big fights and my FPS tanked to 30 it was fucking impossible to aim at crit spots, that input delay is like having your crosshair travelling through mud towards its target. Medium/High graphics with some low settings, some ini tweaks and upscaling but no frame generation and get 60 fps.
Before the 13th patch the loudspeaker world events lagged my game to 15-20fps.
Now my game only lags with the fire laser underbarrel attachment which i've stopped using. Smooth outside of that.

It’s good specifically when it’s on an Order weapon. Order weapons have shit slow charge ups to shoot and are balanced against that by having very high damage. When a Ripper mag goes on an Order weapon it overrides the charge up system, applying the Ripper full auto firing rate to the very high damage Order weapon

Don't bother with the random matchmaking for the story. Borderlands has never been built for it outside of the instanced "dungeons"/bosses
There are a LOT of issues with it in BL4 too. XP and money can just break, and you get 10x the amount of XP from enemies for no reason. Lag happens all the time even on 21 ping servers. Missions get locked and progress saved if you do something you haven't done yet on your own world. There's a specific mission (vend of the line) that rewards a legendary weapon that gets closed as well but you can't receive a reward for it (the machine locks as soon as a single person buys a weapon regardless of party size) so you just lose a legendary.

I have a 4070 super, a ryzen 7 7800X3D with 32 gigs of ram and I've been told regularly that my computer is "old" yet im getting 65-75fps at 1440p with high-max settings with just basic TSR quality upscailing. Game did run like hot trash for the first few days though like I couldn't run it above low textures but that seems to have been fixed.
