I used to be a big advocate for Lumen until recently. I liked and still like the way it looks, it's a comprehensive lighting and ray tracing solution that means absolutely everything has lighting detail all of the time, with different colored lights, volumetrics, specular reflections, ambient occlusion and sharp shadows on all objects. In many games with rasterized lighting and even some with ray tracing implementations, the lighting is not as encompassing and you get some scenes or objects which just look flat.

Reason I no longer support it is because I started playing Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered. That game looks absolutely spectacular, and has everything I just mentioned above, specular detail on every object, contrasting colored lighting, etc. Everything looks good all the time with full shadow and specular lighting detail on every surface all the time, honestly some of the best graphics I've seen in a game. If not for the janky SSR I'd be fully convinced the lighting is ray-traced as it looks exactly like Star Wars Outlaws with RTXDI. And yet it's all completely smooth, clean looking and free of noise, and runs at 100+fps on a 5090 at 4k native.

A major culprit of the poor performance definitely has to do with the open world. Playing in the fortress missions or the central city area has way better performance than the three open world zones. Wouldn't surprise me if they aren't properly culling the open world and a ton of stuff is being rendered when it shouldn't.

each borderlands game got progressively more janky and had specific levels that caused memory leaks that the community ended up having to patch themselves cause the studio is too busy pushing out new dlc outfits to shill.

borderlands TWO - even with all the community patches - still has a few buggy levels most players avoid/limit time in cause they cant even fix em with community patches.

borderlands 3? jank as fuck for no reason. requires twice the gpu power of 2. and now 4? looks worse.

nevermind how horrible the story and characters have gotten: the game's core, its engine, is jank. which is a shame after how well the first game performed and how good it looked, for how long ago it came out versus what they put out.

That's more or less the actual point, it's like complaining that those prebuilt PCs suck - no they're designed to be hands off and entry level, you could totally customize one to be excellent, but at that point it's often cheaper to start with your own to begin with (but not always)
It's not the prebuilts that are the issue, it's the people who buy them and use them out of the box
