the fact that they remained true to their vision of a child's painting fractured by his parents for the entire game did it for me, visuals and the heavy use of bloom making it dreamlike/surreal. Perfect art direction in my opinion.

The music did a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of atmosphere. I loved the gameplay and the actual artstyle, but the graphical fidelity wasn't much to brag about.

As far as the gameplay goes, I enjoyed how robust the Pictos/Lumina system was for customization, how the AP system works all in all, the ability to stack turns by manipulating speed, and how distinct each characters' individual skills are, as well as the trend of having each ability get an upgraded effect under certain conditions. Free aim and hitting weak points was also fun, and Gradient attacks are well implemented. However, the dodge/block system is a big, big albatross around its neck because of how much it overcentralizes everything. It turns every fight into a rote memorization check at its core (sans a very few optional ones with turn limits), devalues defensive buffs/builds and overpushes you into glass cannon builds. I like that there's so much breadth of possibility that you can crack the game in half, especially postgame, but it's way too slanted towards one-shots. Playing on Expert didn't really make it more interesting either (as higher difficulties usually do), just more tedious.

My only problem with this is that it made a lot of the cool fantastical vistas feel... well, shallow maybe? Like in a Fromsoft game if you saw a frozen mountain littered with never-ending fires and ruined locomotives you'd be wandering around the place looking for clues on what the area is and how it got that way, and it'd be internally consistent. Here any weirdness can just fall back on "it's a literal child's fantasy painting + broken by its creators' fighting" and that's all the explanation you need and get, which deflates it a bit in my eyes.
