It's not about them being black or even the setting, it's about how it's presented.
If there's just some cool nigga in a game like coach or barret everyone usually likes them. Nowadays, when they make black characters they always make them look like really ugly zoomers, give them an insufferable personality (or no personality at all) and make it so all the characters love them unless they're evil chuds.
If devs just made good characters that happen to be black, instead of black characters who's entire character is that they're black, then there wouldn't nearly be as much controversy.
You can say the same about gay and tranny characters too.
