Depends on the game, I either Git gud™ or I stop playing it if the game is not worth it.
For Dark Souls and Elden Ring, I got gud™ because the games were legitimately good and it was worth it.

Hollow Knight I dropped a little bit after getting the dream nail and losing like 3k geo because the last checkpoint was on the other side of the fucking universe. I now saw that this was going to be the game, artifically bloat the length by these bullshit platforming segments by purposefully making savepoints pointlessly scarce, and give 0 direction to the player so they have to wander around aimlessly before they find where to go in an environment where exploration is actively punished by the exact horseshit I described. This one was not worth getting gud, so I dropped it.

The only game that's ever been "too hard" for me was Battletoads and that's mainly because I didn't have the patience as an 11 year old to beat it. Probably could now considering I've beaten similarly difficult games like Contra. Most of the games people say are "too hard" are games that just require patience. I let the original GoW lower the difficulty a pip when I got frustrated with the Ares fight. Ares went from being impossible to a total pushover.
A few years later I lowered difficulty for the Letho fight in Witcher 2. It did the same thing: Made a seemingly impossible fight way too easy. I reloaded my save in dissatisfaction and beat Letho on normal soon after. Haven't used easy mode since.

You might be right, but the issue with that is that there were plenty of small Medieval cults that sprung up that ended up being more-or-less as described. Best example that comes to mind was that Adamites, a schism of a schism that even the Hussites took down because of how insane they were. It was something both Catholic and Hussite sources agreed was just an outright insane death cult.
Granted, the Cathars could be an exception, after all it was Pope Innocent III who ordered that Crusade, and he infamously had a hand in the Fourth Crusade too.
