Thoughts on this franchise? I find them interesting and want to play.

Mediocre at best.
>AW2
Fantastic.

Both flawed in completely different ways, but I love both. I prefer 1 because I think the story is better and I also think Alan is a better protagonist in it.
I think 2's story starts out really strong, arriving as Saga in bright falls, learning about this new murder mystery and then being introduced to Alan, but as far as building momentum goes, I think it falls apart in the 2nd half, even though it is still fun to play and there are cool story beats.

>AW1
Average third person shooter. Carried by the story, characters, and levels. Also American Nightmare is good too.
>AW2
More competently made than 1, but is a different genre as it leans into survival horror more and is akin to the Resident Evil remakes. Has a split protagonist with their own stories that start strong, falter towards the third act, then pick back up at the end. It's pretty good and I like it as much as the original.

My issue with the story is Saga having less agency as it goes on and her development ending after she learns her kid is written into the story. It just becomes "MY DAUGHTER" and she gets less to do. Alan is at least having a mystery and strange things to keep his story busy, but Saga just starts doing less.

OP EVERYTHING BELOW IS A SPOILER DONT READ.

I think Saga falls apart as a character immediately after her family is introduced because they don't capitalize on it, it doesn't feel like a real thing to her or me the player. The second she is convinced that Alan is actually fucking with her life by rewriting it, she should be done with the jokes and there should be a sense of urgency to everything she does but it just isn't there. You mention her not having enough agency, I feel the opposite kind of. I wish Alan fucking with her life and her feeling helpless about it played a role in the story but it doesn't, she's just kind of always in control and I found that boring.

What better way to play up Alan losing it than by seeing first hand the consequences of him rewriting another persons life for his own benefit? But they never capitalize on it, because the threat never feels real, it never feels urgent.

And while I'm ranting, I also think they dropped the ball with Alan, he's obviously still the main character and the story is very much central to him but he feels stagnant, there's no interesting character development that happens, he's just kind of hitting the same note throughout the entire game and then the game kind of ends on the same exact note as the first game and that felt like a bummer to me.

I'm being very critical of it now but I do like AW2, and there are a lot of cool story beats and like I said the first half of it is really strong in terms of setting the story up and getting you intrigued.

I don't get it how people can tolerate this shit game.
OP, try going through the first chapter and see if you like it because it will be the whole game just like this (aim your flashlight at the braindead enemies and then shoot them). It will not get any more interesting or fun, the chapters are getting longer, everything else stays the same. I didn't know that so I kept playing, don't make the same mistake.

I own it on Epic for like $20 and can say outside of the launcher being slower that it's fine. If you play on PS5 though then buy it on that. Epic gets your money either way.
>>720744109
Fully agree with what you said. It feels like they want Alan to be this type that overreaches, unintentionally causing harm through his visions, but they don't capitalize on it by showing the direct consequences of it. The most they do is have Saga say, 'YOU WROTE MY DAUGHTER IN?' multiple times and have her calls be missed by her husband and that's about it. You don't really get to grapple with how she feels towards it or Alan outside of 'mad.' You'd think she'd try to figure out her own way of doing things rather than going along with Alan at that point.

The first game has a decent atmosphere, but the gameplay gets very repetitive and the twist doesn't carry it.
>go from a to b, but suddenly a semi truck lands in front of you and now you have to take a 20 minute detour until the next thing falls from the sky

I haven't played the second game but it looks like woke nonsense so I shan't be playing it.

AW1: Awesome. Great fun, but I played it on launch so I experienced it during that era, it might be hard for some people to go back to it if they're used to modern games.
AW2: Alan's sections are fun. Saga's suck. Profiling Board sucks and ruins the pacing. Get it on a deep sale
>other entries in the franchise
American Nightmare: fun for background info on Scratch, get on a deep sale
>Quantum Break: "technically" not part of the universe due to licensing issues but Shawn Ashton's character is clearly meant to be an alternate world counterpart of Shawn Ashton's character in AW2. Same with Lance Reddick's character and Mr Door in AW2.
>Control: fun, but combat is repetitive. Cool setting and the DLC is important to understanding AW2 and presumably Control 2 and AW3

it took me about half way into the story of aw2 to realise that like 90% of the combat is completely avoidable. one thing i found odd was the FBC involvment i was under the impression they were some super secret agency but saga reacts to them "taking over the case" as if its a common occurence in the FBI

Should I play the original Alan Wake or the remastered version?
I can play both on my Xbone, but the remaster tend to be cheaper and has all DLCs

The collectibles in Control do suggest that the FBC interact with other Goverment agencies all the time, including FBI.
Anonymous No.720749771 [Report]
>>720749014
I always saw the FBC as being like the real life CIA in that 95% of the employees are above the board civilians who do legitimate work and 5% is non-official cover and the people who oversee them.

Doesn't the framing of this particular scene imply that this is actually a negative and therefore incorrect viewpoint to have since it's in muh dark place
Anonymous No.720750878 [Report]
>>720750639
Yes. The entire point of that sequence is the horror from beyond time and space is trying to break her by bringing all of her negative thoughts and emotions to the surface so she will stop doing what she is doing to fuck up said horror from beyond time and space. /v/ loves it taken out of context because "lmao we was fbi agents 'n shieeeeet"
