Level scaling is why FF8 and Oblivion feel so terrible to play. Nothing matters, and once the player realizes this, they won't even try to level up because there isn't a benefit to doing so.

I know there was a game on the PSP where you sent your characters to fight in an online battle thing with armies. Leveling up was a waste of time and skills were all that mattered. So, a level one character, with the best skills, beat the piss out of anything else.

Oblivion feels especially shitty because of how it's so easy to become outscaled by enemies and be stuck kiting and tickling massive HP sponges around a dungeon. That is unless you just outright break the game in half with enchanting and spellcrafting, but at that point the problem's only been flipped on its head.

At least it makes backtracking through early areas slightly more convenient so it's better than nothing.
