Ill have to think about it soon.
Silksong made me completely rethink and reconsider whether Hollow Knight was ever a good game, or whether because it was one of the first big single games I played, that I had a juvenile appreciation of it.
That would apply to Celeste too...if not for the fact that Celeste survived my return to playing and finishing up optional shit. So much so infact, that it ELEVATED my appreciation of it.
When I returned to clean up some side stuff in Hollow Knight though, I had a weird feeling that the bosses like Grim and Radiance were not as hard as I remember the other bosses in the game being.
But they were supposed to be the hardest base game bosses so what gives?
This gets deeper, because now that ive played Silksong. I don't actually think the problem is difficulty, I think its something else hidden underneath.
When I returned to clean up side stuff in Hollow Knight this was fairly soon after I had played Iconoclasts.
And If i could honestly consider Iconoclasts a metroidvania, then id say its the best one, but I cant.
Iconoclasts bosses were "easier" (really hard to quantify something like this). But they were
1. MUCH MUCH more varied.
2. Incorparated and involved platforming in the boss fight much more frequently.
3. Encouraged utilization of newly acquired abiltities and tools in novel ways in the boss fight.
4. Dual Interactions with NPC companions.
Which is why, despite having much fewer bosses than Hollow Knight and Silksong, I remember almost all of them far more distinctively, just by sheer virtue of the fact that I had to engage with them in not only more ways, but they demanded those different engagements.
I still have to think about this, so i dont quite have quite an indepth answer with the exact problem with Silksong, and as a result: HK
I chocked up my displeasure with HK's endgame side stuff to thr fact that you dont engage with the world anymore but only bosses and combat. And I wonder if the answer lies there.

Yeah, costumes are fine, but it doesn’t fix how weird the animations feel in motion. Game’s got that stiff early-gen indie 3D jank. Honestly feels like they put all their time into the OST and called it a day for polish. If modders start tweaking animations and adding QOL like teleport rooms and better hit feedback, it might actually be decent. Until then, I’m sticking with the classics.

Yeah, i mean thats the obvious thing to point out. But I think its surface level, that's not the actual problem. Celeste reuses its level design in its B and C sides. Or atleast in the sense that "its the same level themeing and interactions" but yet it feels revitalized because the fundamental mechanics are deep enough that they can constantly be used in new ways.
To be fair, I did enjoy the colosseum. But that is not remotely representative of the average combat encounter and even then there were still problems I had with it.
Also, Silksong never solved the problem of the feeling I had finishing up side content in HK despite new areas in Part 2.
But my thoughts are sporadic currently.
