>1990
>a masterpiece can be created by a team of 10-20 people in just 1-2 years with a budget of less than 200k
>2025
>a mediocre, formulaic AAAslop is created by a team of 500+ and takes 6+ years and 200+ million dollars
Gaming going mainstream was a mistake.

No game from 1990 is worth playing today and is no masterpiece, just cause you were a kid doesn't make it a masterpiece. You talk about formulaic slop yet most 1990 games are 2 hour long platformers

Even "shit games" from 1990 are better than the modern slop we're served today.

The players demanded convenience. They wanted streamlined UI and game mechanics brought over to their favorite franchises thinking it would improve them. You can argue most of those changes did but as OP just described, budgets ballooned and risks were diminished.

You disingenuous faggot, the 90s were when gaming became mainstream. That's when the NES came out. That's when Pokemon happened. That's when fucking Mortal Kombat and DOOM were all over the fucking news.

>people say AA games stopped existing
>they haven't entirely, some actually do exist but they're typically flawed as you would expect
>actually play one
>enjoy it
>go into a thread about it
>absolutely nothing but whining about how it isn't worth more than $5 because it reuses locations or doesn't have extremely in depth combat or some other shit like that
The fact is that we like to act like "games don't need to have mega budgets" but then when something that does have a small budget releases, unless it's an exceptional 10/10 it gets treated like dogshit. You might not be one of them - or you very well may be - but the fact is that people do have higher standards now.

based about platformers but nah there are retro games out there, there are retro RPGs

Great games were still being made almost yearly in the mid 00s. The question is where was the tipping point of games becoming exponentially more time consuming and expensive to make?

Even when a new console dropped, you still had games releasing on older consoles. Dreamland 3 came out when I was in first grade and the PS1, Saturn and N64 were all the rage.

The biggest irony is that the bigger of a studio you get working on a game, the less of an overall vision you have and less of a collaborative mindset you get as well. Take something like Doom for example, you had the tech guy, the gameplay guy, the map guy, the art guy, the music guy etc. etc. All different skillsets, all working towards the same vision. The moment you add in contractors or bloated studio structure with C-suite and HR based roles, the more diluted the vision becomes.
You can also see this with iconic games series and compare newer entries to older entries.
