8 suffers from the same thing as 2, a leveling system completely detached from the norm that polarizes people. Except in 8's case it's fun to fuck around and break the system where as 2 was just tedious. It's also the middle child of the PS games so it ends up getting sidelined for the first (7) or the return to basics younger sibling (9).
7 had the benefits of a longer time to cook, where as 8 and 9 where more rushed to keep yearly releases. There was a lot of experimenting from Square as a result. In 8 it was in the game while in 9 it was more multimedia focused such as PlayOnline gutting half the strategy guide which is easier to ignore.
Add that up and it's more interesting to talk about 8 and also easier to dunk on it so you get more attention.
