I still like to ignore what 343 did and rationalise the Forerunners as Humans, too, but consider themselves different from mainline humanity to a point they'd probably be offended if you called them human. It wasn't a bad idea to make the Forerunners a distinct faction from Pre-Historic Humans, but making them complete aliens just removes all the built-up mystique throughout the games. If I ever write a fanfic about Halo, this something I'd definitely try to explore.

Kind of. Bungie wasn't really sure what to do with the Forerunners throughout the trilogy, so who they actually were was up in the air despite the hints towards them being Humans. I believe it was still their decision to make the Forerunners actual aliens rather than Humans, given discussion about changes they made to the Halo Bible after Halo 3 came out.

My model basically just reconciles both ideas of the pre-history of Halo by making it both Humans and Forerunners are the same species, just different factions with different values, because there's good ideas in both that get wasted if you only pick one. But 343 absolutely dropped the ball when it came to developing the Forerunners. How they thought making one of the most revered factions into the clusterfuck it is now is beyond me.

Moving Halo from its fantastical roots, hinted at in Halo CE due to a leftover from the Marathon era, to some shitting war on terror propaganda piece of the US military from 2004-2010.
