I use these, specifically the 250ohm versions with the jcally jm20 max dongle. (The dongle isn't always necessary, but motherboards vary in how much power they put over 3.5mm and I switch it between more than one source so it's just easier to use a USB dongle).
I really like them. They're comfortable, fairly durable (one plastic part broke but a 3D printed replacement was easy to install), and they sound great to me.

Some caveats though.
First, I use them for movies, music, and single-player games. I hardly ever play anything multiplayer, just some casual mode cs2 occasionally, so I don't know good they are for hearing footsteps or whatever. You'd probably want something with a mic if you play a lot of multiplayer anyway.

Second, my hearing isn't the best. It's not bad enough to count as hearing impaired but I have tinnitus that I usually drown out with a fan, I have recurring earwax issues, various online tests suggest I can't hear frequencies that I should be able to at my age, and I sometimes struggle to understand people especially in noisy environments.
Audiophiles with (I assume) great hearing often tell me that the DT770 has a shit-tier frequency response curve with ear-splitting treble or something like that. But my not-very-discriminating ears are very happy with them.

This shit is dirt cheap and had been since the 70s
I got mine for, I want to say $40, in 2010 when I was getting into audio a little bit when I was a kid. I figured it'd be an entry point and that I'd move on to more expensive models, but I've never actually tried anything that actually sounds meaningfully better without a dedicated amp. It also has a detachable and replaceable chord, so it's pretty much guaranteed to last for life

if you dont need mic pretty much every audiophile grade headphone or iem will be better than most of gaming headsets. Open backs are nice but i had problems with louder fan noise bleeding inside, some hifimans are nice tho, for single player games they really sets wide soundstage, with older games expensive headphones are bit too much, you can really hear that sound is compressed and technology simply was not there. I like iems for now, chinks makes new stuff almost every week.

i'm only using these because they are comfy.
the build quality is shit though. one drop and they will shatter because its mostly plastic. audio quality is pretty shit too, its got piercing highs and no lows just like all the other studio headphones. you need to mod them to unfuck their audio quality by putting in cushions inside the cups so the highs start sounding ok again.

also how the fuck does anyone buy headphones in 2025 when everything is marketed towards niggers, so everything has to be wireless with bluetooth and there's no selection of closed over-ears unless it's straight up something worse than a budget gamer headset from 2011 but you pay a $200 premium because we are in 2025

there's not a "best headset" for gaming, some say that open headphones give better spacial perception (and personally I just like them more in general) but then if fore example you have the window open and there's noise outside it might cover low sounds while this wouldn't be a problem with closed headphones.
As long as it's good quality and well-balanced it should be great

Steelseries wireless.
I used to sell Steelseries back in 2010. They were cheap, poorly made, dogshit products. But they really improved a lot over the years. I know this reads like an ad but I've been using the Arctic Pro Wireless for 5 years and it's fantastic. It comes with 2 batteries so instead of needing to use a wire to recharge I can just "reload" by switching batteries, if needed. Comes with on-board retractable mic. Also very comfortable, I can wear it the entire day.

Shame the mic wasn't great, and they always had a problem with weak wiring (you'd snag the cable and the connection inside the ear cup would break)
Last one I bought though the build quality was significantly lower what they used to be, the mic would rattle about instead of staying in place.

Initially I got the DT770 Pro 80ohm
Decent enough although I had to change the pads. Honestly not bad. Comfortable. The hinges broke though and I had to buy new ones.
Then I got the AKG K371. Most uncomfortable shits I ever tried. They're just garbage, I don't know how people like these. Sound quality isn't worth it. Creaky too and if you have just normal fucking ears prepare for them to touch the driver. I guess people like them because of the detachable XLR cable? I just do not fucking understand.
Then I got the HE400se. I'm not gonna lie, they're great, but open back is an inconvenient tradeoff. Very comfortable except for the headband which is dogshit that hurts you and you need extra padding for that. I modded them and it was a mistake because the little improvement meant they were a bit too open for specs of dust and stupid stuff like hairs to get in. But if you're fine with fully open ones these seem good. Although I think the FT1 Pro are widely recommended and having tried the FT1 these are comfortable for sure.

Mic is ok, just make sure to enable noise isolation to at least low to make sure it’s loud enough for others to hear. Audio quality is great, I just use these instead of speakers for every game I play.

Wireless headphones are necessary for me since I game on the couch, way more convenient and comfortable. If you have the money and need the wireless functionality, these are probably the best in the market.

I am a hobby musician and I have owned the 770 Pros for some years. Great functional headphones for what they are.
When gaming with friends I used some Corsair Void Wireless for years because that was the only practical mic I had around at home for voice chat.

I bought a used, but like new, set of Audez Maxwell earlier this year for 100€, and I've been spoiled. Coming back to either the Beyer dynamics or Corsairs, the Maxwells sound much better, isolate sound much better (no ANC), lasts for literal weeks on a single charge, and have a great detachable mic included. The 770 pros are surprisingly poor at shutting out sound for a closed back set and the subtle sound of the cable rubbing against stuff is annoying too.

The only thing I dread with the Maxwells are the reports that the planar speakers can break for no reason. I wouldn't throw them in a bag to bring them places unless I really need to, and still that isn't a guarantee they will survive. I'm perfectly fine without warranty for just 100€, and they are worth full price as long as you can have them exchanged under warranty, but you can't expect them to last you decades like the 770 pros.

>Are they durable and will I need to get better earpads or headband with them? I'm trying to get something that will last at least a decade.
I can't speak for durability, since they're pretty new, but so far they've been fine. The older pair of 770s I had lasted almost a decade before I was stupid and damaged the audio jack. The Pro X's have replaceable cables, so a mistake like that isn't a soldering job now. I'd be pretty confident that they'll last for a long time if you take care of them, and even if you don't most of the stuff on them can be exchanged and replaced.
Pads and bands, they're okay but 3rd party ones will probably do you better in the long run. They won't disintegrate on you like the pleather HyperX's do, but you should clean them because they will accumulate grime in the leather. If you do stick with stock, then they're comfy, I've had some bad cups in other headsets but the Beyer's have really nicely padded/sized ones for my ears and I don't get any chafing from them.
The only thing I'd really complain about with the Beyers is that the dimple ratchets on the headbands aren't my favourite thing. They won't snag hair or anything like that, but the metal headband has a tendency to crack/pop if you misalign the dimples, which is easy to do. It won't damage them, but it can be annoying.
The only other thing worth noting is compared to the DT770 Pros the treble isn't as pronounced and the bass is a little stronger. If you haven't experienced both of them you probably won't really notice it but the Pro X's feel a little less sparkly in the sound, but they do feel a little more "full" in general.

Some other people here will recommend the other models that are open backs, that's your choice at the end of the day. I prefer closed back headphones personally, but the open backs tend to have a "wider" feeling sound if you have good acoustics in the room you use. That's more of a music specific thing though.

They're a great pair of headphones, but they're much better for studio and sound editing work because they're very neutral sounding without punching up the bass or the treble.
That doesn't mean they're bad for video games or other media because the soundstage is fantastic for closed ear and the bass is still noticeably present.

People tend to want their bass blown out for some reason when playing video games because it makes sfx like gunshots sounds chunkier, but in my experience it makes everything else like ambient noise or speech very muddy or inaudible.

Enjoy the quality headphones you purchased knowing they're about 9999x better than any 'gaming headset' you could have bought for double or even triple the price.

they're shit for vidya, voices sound like they come out of a cave and sound effects like sword hits sound muffled.

Sound stage would be a suitable term. Anyway most IEMs are meme pushed by influencers to hype the latest Drop X Moonflower cunny sakura edition IEM that fixes all of the issues FOR REAL THIS TIME TRUST ME GUISE BUY IT IN THE GROUP BUY BEFORE STOCK GOES. Every month or so is a new wave of totally organic hype that vanishes once the product launches and the holy prophet crinicale has said buy it. None of these get discussed further once people realise they are kinda shit but then the next hype cycle starts.

Flip it the other way good headphones still get discussed and some have been in production for over a decade because they do what they do well, even if that sound profile is not for you (the DT770's are a prime example).

Because they are. They are V shaped. High bass and high treble but low mids. You want mids unless you're a nigger who doesn't listen to metal or classical. Get a pair of hd599, like a real white man.

I have that, it's ok
I only wish it had better bass, feels like it lacks that rumbly oomph

guess so, i legit went with the most shilled shit last year by every big youtube audiophile, got myself 4 sets, and used each one once or twice
wanted to use them for vr, but ended up running quest 3 default speakers, they are decent enough
at this point i have a pile of heaphones, earbuds, iems i dodnt even use
but dont worry, im now ordering open earbuds, those that look like faggy earings since apparently now some have decent audio
i didnt learn my lesson, though even with worse audio i will be fine with something that dosnt annoy me

Planar drivers have that deep subbass rumble, not so much initial slam like in dynamic drivers
