I played through the Zero series on MGBA using an old Xbox controller and the ROMs patched with a restoration hack for each game which just restores the blood effects and certain edgier elements of the script, otherwise the game was unchanged. I did use a keyboard originally with Zero 1 and you can definitely beat the game with just that, but I personally found it a lot easier to do combos with multiple weapons easier with a controller.

I love the Zero series on the whole, but I never got the affection for Zero 3 specifically. Mechanically it's maybe the best game overall seeing as it took away a lot of the dumb shit from Zero 2 and doesn't have some of the dumb shit added in Zero 4, but I don't care for its levels or bosses. I feel like a lot of people's affection for it is wrapped up in Omega, but he was a really underwhelming boss even if the mirror match is cool on paper. He's way too easy. Interesting. Thinking on that, I also find it interesting that Rock's power absorption ability works on all the different types of robots he comes across. It makes sense enough for the repurposed Light RMs or Wily RMs, but even other manufacturers or Star Droids get their powers taken, or like you said Shadow Man who could be some kind of ancient Robot.
I get it's a gameplay mechanic first and foremost, but man Light really must have been the messiah of robotics.

If Energy in the series is not diegetic, maybe the elemental chips are a system that saves a LOT of energy, seeing that Zero does not have a bar for weapon usage; so having CX do that crazy shit for his variable system would also make him an energy gulping monster, which in context would not be the best.

There is something alluring about the games that have stupid convoluted/grindy/esoteric systems that are prohibitive and anal(japanese) but make certain kinds of people go back. X5, Z4 and Z1 are the games I have replayed the most because they have customization options that almost nobody uses because they are behind frustrating features.
