You can, you just need to be so overwhelmingly violent and thorough with it that the results are extremely Pyrrhic. It's why unpopular totalitarian states end up stacking the bodies so high that even when they win in the short term, they don't last the following century and collapse on their own.

But what's more worrisome is how good ideas do not always win out. In a society where education is exclusive to a small portion of the population, stupid ideas can infest the intelligentsia for centuries until the cancer kills them. In societies where education is more widespread however, you have a different problem where popular ideas are hard to kill even if they're actively poisonous.
