Realistically, I guess what can be done is for indie devs to just do the best game they can, exactly how they want, with the stuff they want, and market it to the public they want.

COMPLETELY IGNORE people who are not part of the target audience. DO NOT engage in conversation in social media, DO NOT give answers, DO NOT listen to people outside the target audience, DO NOT add stuff that goes outside the intended direction of the project, just do what you have to do.

Big companies don't have this luxury because they are too expensive to maintain, so they have to bet on what they perceive as 'guaranteed successes' and deal more with public opinions.

If the game is a success, perhaps some companies may learn that they don't need to listen to the demands of people who don't even consume games in the first place.
