just seems like the appeal was kind of lost with how weak those scanners were and how there was never much reward to the whole process, though maybe it's the sort of idea that phones could do well these days?
apparently, these were a pretty big deal in japan because kids there loved the element of going out and finding the strongest barcodes but i don't have a source to hand on that
