what is it about older games that give younger generations some sort of sense of dread?

That Rugrats game for PS1 is genuinely the most unsettling game I've ever played.

>early 3D graphics
>janky unnatural animations
>lower quality audio
all of these things intersect to create an uncanny valley effect. Millennials are immune because their nostalgia overrides this effect.

There have been a few ps1 games that were unsettling, but not scary. Particularly games that had low rendering distance with no music or ambience.

Nothing. It's all performative, they say they're scared which activates the culturally assigned neurons in the viewer and gives them money.

The gore in The Citadel puts me off. It's part of why I like that game. Makes the stakes feel more real

My first gameplay of Minecraft, I thought something I learned later was probably a zombie was another player, the thing that I am not alone in my singleplayer world, and I don't know that person, scared me so much I tried to cover myself with brick (I was playing on creative mode on version 1.2.5)

the only thing that unsettled me about Super Mario 64 was the eel. But then again, i'm terrified of things in the water.

they didn't grow up with early 3D so it seems uncanny to them

I think Outlast 1 was way more unsettling, 2 goes out of its way to be so edgy and bleak that it becomes a comedy game
