Frame gen to boost a low framerate into something more acceptable is bad because the increased latency becomes very noticeable, and that's exactly how most ports are expecting it to be used. When used to boost a high framerate even higher the latency increase becomes very hard to actually notice.

Frame Gen should not be used as an excuse for lazy programmers to not optimize their code.

its not a replacement for low fps. DLSS + FG are "win harder" technologies. The better your raw performance, the more benefits youll get out of it. If youre doing something retarded like 30 fps at 1080p, you gonna be in for a rough time. Theyre both AI based and AI loves more data. You really want something like 4k + 90FPS then you can comfortably render shit at 720p with DLSS then use FG to top off to 120 without issues.

It requires a framerate of 60FPS to be of value. If you CAN do Nvidia latency reduction + boost it in some scenarios, if implemented 100% correctly, is functional (though with 40ms of additional input delay) at 40FPS locked, if it doesn't dip a single frame below 40FPS at any point. Framegen induces a significant amount of latency that can be compensated for if you reach 120FPS or greater. At 240FPS in framegen 2x the latency is actually lower than running 120fps native. However framegen induces a lot of artifcats and visual warping at anything under 120fps and it gets significantly worse the lower you go. These visual bugs are especially bad with particle effects and light sources.
It is a nice feature for smooth gaming provided you can reach stable 60 FPS but is not acceptable as a means to compensate for poor optimization. Framegen sub 60FPS can induce as much as 300ms of input latency which feels outrageously bad when gaming and 100x worse on a mouse. Perhaps someone using a controller won't feel as bad so long as the game isn't a precision platformer.
I really enjoy framegen in performant games. Memelands 4 is no such game and framegen actually induces crashes in it which is ironic.

You're going to have worse latency unless your monitor's max refresh rate is greater than your native framerate (after upscaling if you choose to use it) times the frame gen multiplier of your choice
Given your example of 90fps, you want at least a 180Hz max refresh rate (actually higher because 90fps is just average) just for 2x frame gen and at least 270Hz for 3x.
Otherwise FG will throttle your native frame rate such that the post-FG-multiplier refresh rate hits the frame rate cap imposed by Reflex (a requirement to enable Nvidia frame gen)

I'd wish they added a mode that just tops up the dips that sometimes occur. Vrr does a good job with tearing but you still notice this rubberband feeling with sudden dips to a few FPS below the monitor refresh rate. So just a few fake frames to reach 120 for example.

It mixes previous frames and guesses whats next all at the same time. It adds in the same motion artifacts that your brain does. It pre-fucks the image. Your frames come cucked and gaped by nvidia brain cock.
Even if frame gen becomes 99.99% accurate, it will never look good because your brain will guess different and see the break in the pattern.
