I can tell you that i randomly picked up MGS1 from Blockbuster on a whim. And at the time there was simply nothing else like it. It blew everything else away. Way ahead of it's time. Couldn't believe that a game could be like that. Which is why people were aching for a sequel.

A lot of people got filtered hard, but the twist ending for MGS2 was worth it and definitely took the idea of a "sequel" to the next level. The barrier between the game world and our world dissolved. It even challenged, like Lynch's The Return, the idea of narrative closure. What other game has done what MGS2 has done with applying storytelling in the context of an interactive medium like video games?
Also, MGS3 was Kojima attempting to mesh fan-service with his desires as a creator.

And to add. MGS1-3 definitely deserve deification because nothing since has really dethroned them. Hence why theyre "remaking" them now.
