I'm curious. Is this a decent gaming laptop for the price? Any other recommendations? I don't know much about gaming but my little brother, who does, just hit 1 year of sobriety so I want to to get him a gift

Buying Intel is a waste of money until they get their shit together. Maybe the US government will make them make better CPUs

You can't afford not to buy this.

only makes sense to buy laptops if you travel a lot

I'm not a PC master race but please don't ever buy yourself or anyone a computer/laptop that has 8GB VRAM. VRAM means video memory and that's attached to the GPU. Modern video games on the PC have been pure cancer in terms of optimization and anyone who has 8GB VRAM genuinely can't play modern PC games well. But as you can see OP if you go browsing for laptops, prebuilt PCs, or video cards anything above 8GB VRAM becomes more expensive.

Welcome to PC gaming. Let me rephrase it, welcome to modern PC gaming where adequate equipment costs well over one thousand dollars. You're looking for a laptop that has 12GB VRAM the lowest you should go for your brother if the budget is the issue. Without a budget, 16GB in your video card is THE MINIMUM ON ANY PC OR LAPTOP.

It is the most basic of the 40 series laptop, OP. I mean, if your brother is a casual then yeah go for it but do not expect to hold its own against heavy games.

Buy this gaming laptop instead! It has an objectively better price/performance ratio!

The biggest thing hampering most gaming laptopts are the "M" versions of GPUs not being the same as the otherwise advertised "Nvidia 4050" or whatever, instead they are some much weaker versions for the necessities of making a laptop GPU that doesn't instantly drain all your battery to begin with.

Look up the real difference of how fast they are at GPUBenchmark and then compare that to the price of these devices. That should give you the correct idea of is it "worth" it or not, which I'm sure depends on your available disposable income. But mostly you're paying 3 to 6 times more money and less connectivity or expandability for portability.

I found a laptop with a better GPU with the caveat that the CPU is slightly weaker.

read everyone elses comments and trying to take it in. I'm a total lamo when it comes to specs so just trying to make sense of it all.
What I'm kinda feeling is I should try to get one thats about a grand and thats the sweet spot?
I know he plays a lot of world of warcraft, hearthstone, and roblox. so..idk maybe hes a casual gamer so this could be okay for that kinda stuff?

Is your brother playing with an old laptop or PC? Because if you buy one it might be weaker than what your brother has.

Yeah the two examples posted itt are decent for the price but bump it up by a hundred or a two is still worth it right at this price point.

If your brother is more of a laptop guy go for a 4060 GPU. You can get one at around a grand like you want.
However, if he only plays at home just get a PC with a 4060 or even a 5060 at less than 900 dollars.
PC 4060 is superior to Laptop 4060.

okay great question. I remember him buying his current gaming laptop about 6 years ago or so and recently hes been mentioning that its "going to crap". I really don't want him to get frustrated and relapse, plus the one year mark so I feel like I should hook my little bro up.
as far as the specs on his current laptop...im not sure. I guess I should do more intel.

>>721127071
So, I actually mentioned this to him. but he will have none of my suggestions lol. He has autism and likes to be mobile. He mostly spends his time at the library and "I like to use their wifi and play magic the gathering with with my friend" so yeah.

6 years ago the RTX 20 series was introduced, so either your brother is using an old 10 series or a 20 series.
A 4060 laptop would be a decent upgrade.

AMD > Intel
also find something with a good hinge + airflow and not to mention easy to fucking repair. Start watching teardown vids.

Get steam deck or get a desktop. Don't fucking get a laptop for any fucking reason unless you need a portable typewriter.
Anonymous No.721129274 [Report]
Laptops generally aren't worth it unless you fit the specific use case scenario(s) and/or money is not an object. If the latter were true, you wouldn't be looking at a 4050 laptop. Does he travel a lot? Do you want him to have something he can whip out when he comes over? When you're talking about low range 'gaming' laptops, you also have to understand that they are not built to last, with largely plastic frames/chassis, so that really has to be taken into consideration. If you just want to get him something nice to play games on, and he doesn't travel a lot, maybe you could get him a part to go in his current build or some parts to begin a new build.
