For saving games.
Are these any good? I plan on getting something like 8TB of one.
Seagate or western digital variants. They're both around the same price.

The seagates usually let you replace the drive inside. The western digitals use a proprietary connection so you can't easily swap the drives out. But the seagates are likely to fail, whereas the WDs are likely to last a long time.

no not really. especially the first one.
seagate is probably the worse possible thing to backup anything important in your life to.

you can get a 14tb drive and a dock for it around the same price as that WD 8tb in your second picture.

It looks like it's an external HDD.
Seagate HDDs are known to be low quality and always die young.

Seagate's had more failures of late, but their install base is bigger. A bad batch hits harder with them. I haven't had a Seagate fail ever, and my firewall is booting off a 40MB drive from my 386.

everyone in the thread says seagate is bad except 1 ancient fag with a 40mb one.

As an addendum, backing up games is dumb unless your bandwidth is ass. You can always recover it. Back up stuff that will disappear, like porn that rubs you the right way. It won't always be up and available.

There was a website where some big data center posted averaged stats for all drives by capacity/manufacturer/model number, but i don't remember what it was called.
Toshiba had the best stats (marginally) , but they are much more expensive new & used than other brands, to the point where you can sometimes buy 2 drives from another brand used for the cost of a Toshiba of the same capacity, also used.
Anonymous No.721134185 [Report]
>>721130496 (OP)
Buy the equivalent loose drive (or shuck one of these if it's cheaper, it rarely is nowadays) and hook it up to an external SATA dock. The interface boards they stick in all external/portable drives are cancer and will genuinely fail before the drive itself does.

>seagate is shit
>wd is shit
i've only ever had 2.5" drives go bad on me and they've been from all brands (seagate, wd, buffalo, maybe even a toshiba). I've yet to have a 3.5" drive go on me (aside from an old SSHD, and it was the flash that went on that) and I torrent and dump shit on mine heavily. As long as they're properly cooled you should be fine

So if my objective is to hoard japanese porn, should I get the cheapest or the most expensive hard drives possible?
Anonymous No.721134251 [Report] >>721134756
You want an nvme drive for gaming, and a disk drive for storage. You should have more than one disk drive so everything has 2 copies or more. If a disk drive fails, you have another copy of that data. Nvme is orders of magnitude faster for loading your games and operating system speed. You should install windows on an nvme drive.
Anonymous No.721134756 [Report] >>721135657
>>721134251
I presume they're just loading games onto the hard drive to transfer onto the NVME later when they feel like playing them. Unless it was old shit designed to run on a hard drive, running most games directly off a hard drive is a small brain move.

Fuck Seagate the only drives I've had fail early within 1year were Seagate. Now I've had other drives die but that was like 5 -10 years later.

The only drive that has failed on me was a portable Samsung 512GB HDD. I've got Seagate portables from 2012 & 2013 that still run fine.

I might be a bit of fucking retard, but can someone explain the point of HDD hubs to me?
>more expensive than an internal HDD with similar storage
>more expensive than most external HDDs
>Needs a power cable, so its less useful as a backup, and also not portable

In what circumstance would i buy a hub instead of just installing another drive in my desktop?

its not about brands, its about the model (or more specifically the batch).
This is why you have so many different people swearing up and down one brand will always outlive the other and vice versa. The tech is always changing, and a brand that is dogshit one year, could be the best the next year, and there really is no way of knowing other than taking the gamble
buy a warranty

Because you have limited ports on your MB, both for disks and usb so you cannot endlessly expand them especially if you have weaker power unit. Let's say that for example you want to download a shitload of anime and mango in good quality(old DVDs, special eps, BR of newer titles)
if you want them all on PC, they'll constantly eat power even if you're not actively use it. With external storage like this, you can only power it up when you neeed them like chekcing your inventory or downloading more to it
with how manga/anime gets removed from internet outside paid sources and how game publishers act right now, it's not abad idea to have an offline storage

Seagate sells around ~20% of the volume Western Digital does.

WD make the most drives AND have the lowest failure rate (HGST technically the lowest, but WD own them)

I'm sure you can build your own external HDD for cheaper than a pre-built

I just looked it up, the Firecuda gaming hub is £480 on their website, but you can buy a Seagate Ironworlf 16tb NAS drive for £225 and a 3.5" HDD enclosure for £20 both from Amazon

the only thing you are getting extra with the Firecuda is a single USB-C and a single USB-A passthrough slots on the front, but then you can also buy a USB hub with more ports for another £20, so it's still not a great deal.
Also the NAS drive will be more reliable than the firecuda drive and will last longer, as NAS drives are designed around 24/7 use
