Is this game's success a fluke? Or does it offer something that other parts of the franchise don't?

It wasn't a fluke, you could make 1000 other western adventure games with cute White girls, a generic mystery plot and an indie music soundtrack and print millions and millions of dollars.

But leftoid devs don't want to do that for obvious reasons and would rather lose money than create anything like LiS 1

It was like a requiem for an unlived youth, sort of a melancholy for something you never had.

LiS1 was an incredibly PERFECT mix of crime mystery, magic, cute girls, youth, scenery and social stuff. Also good pacing.

Nothing came close it afterwards, true.

The sequels decided to shit on the fans of the first game for some reason

Sequel was made by square giving the license to another studio. The people who were in charge of the direct sequel hated the game.

The time gimmick really suits it. But because it's a gimmick they don't want to repeat it too much.

was the sequel made by the original LiS1 team?
Anonymous No.721160370 [Report] >>721161316
>>721159647
No. It was made by a new team that openly hated Chloe. And according to leaks the team was rife with toxic positivity where arguing against decisions immediately started suicide threats and summons to HR.

it probably wasn't that relevant to sales but I think it was a much better take on that movie game adventure format than the telltale stuff. it's obviously still streamlined compared to the traditional games in the genre but it didn't feel like such a cookie cutter cutscene sim. in between the story segments you had large areas where you could just fuck around and find optional shit to mess with, like actual interactive adventure game environments. those short walk around segments in the telltale games felt way more trivial.

why did they hate Chloe?
and what is it with people who spread "positivity" being awful humans?

I remember when it came out people were just hating on it because of the tumblr hipster culture. Ironic thrift store shopper, starbucks drinker, fixed gear bicycle riding crowd seemed to be drawn to it.

Only the first 3 episodes are good. 4 and 5 are bad and were widely hated at the time. Chloe sucks as a character and was justifiably shat on in the terrible sequel.

first couple of acts were good, they started to pander to "fans" after and changed the whole story. fuck episodic games.

They use the veil of positivity as a cover to hide their narcissism. I want to compare it to John Maynard Smith's "Sneaky-fucker" but it's far more insidious than a guy just trying get their nut. The nut in this case is 'dominance' over others. It's more psychopathic.

it came out at the peak of the whole millennial hipster movement and basically embodied the spirit of the times to a tee. the art school setting, the folk soundtrack and coming of age story was like crack to the right kind of person. I'd say it released at the perfect time to capture an audience.
