im shocked at how much of the charm of the original they retained though i still do prefer the 2.5d and portraits
im also shocked at how faithfully they retained the soundtrack. some tracks sound a bit off but most of them sound exactly the same just with higher quality samples which is all i wanted. falcom usually butcher their osts with the remakes/rereleases so it was a nice surprise.

People forget how cheap and quick it is to make sequels to these games since most of the dialogue is unvoiced and 80% of locations are reused.

Estelle's Morale buffs DEF and her Hurricane now inflicts STR down, but I didn't find that as useful as just using Earth Guard instead. Probably works on Normal and Hard but Nightmare enemies are always going to hit hard regardless.

one thing I noticed is xp/levels are like very graded in such a way if someone is at your level you like could use action or turn based it's fine. anything below your level you can just use action and kill it easily (especially since they buff your damage a ton once it's like 5 levels below) and anything higher than your level you get a bunch more xp and it's harder so it just like.

Turns it into a flow where easy enemies you can just kind of swat at in action, hard enemies you do the turn based and focus more so you get more xp for the time investment. And killing low level mobs is kind of pointless and not worth it, im running past enemies much more than I was in like daybreak 2.

It weirdly feels like it just fits how the characters would actually act and feels really fun flow wise since they also have enemies of difficult levels mixed up together. Kind of gets rid of the whole mob grinding thing.

I played the Trails series roughly a decade ago, when the only games available in English were
FC, SC, Cold Steel 1 and Cold Steel 2.
While I wasn't sold on Cold Steel 1, I gave it the benefit of the doubt because it was clearly setting up and the cliffhanger for Cold Steel 2 was fucking insane. Cold Steel 2 was so fucking bad that it killed any love I had for this series even to the point where I couldn't even get into Sky 3rd when it released (I didn't hate it, it just felt pointless to play since it was a set-up game for literal garbage (Cold Steel) and at that point in time Crossbell in English still looked like a NEVER EVER).

But this remake of FC is so fucking good. It's genuinely the most soulful JRPG I've played ages in an era where the soul's genuinely been sucked out of JRPGs and Japanese media in general, that I almost want to put the time into replaying the series again, just to experienced Sky 3rd and Crossbell and hopefulyl being able to power through Haha Man's wild ride to get to Daybreak.

Cold Steel is simultaneously the slowest yet comfiest arc in the series but also the most neck snappingly schizophrenic game tonally that has a plot so unbelievably all over the place that it sometimes feels like satire. I loved it. People shit on it for a variety of reasons but the CS games are unironically some of my favourite JRPGs ever. They just have a vibe I love. I'm sad that Kuro never managed to capture that vibe.

I liked the CS characters most of any of hte arcs. The benefit of the CS games being so unbelievably slow and drawn out is that you also get a lot of down time with the characters, I liked seeing class VII just go about their school life making their own friends, having their own hobbies and doing their own thing which you never really got in the older games where I more felt characters only existed to serve the plot rather than having their own lives is what makes the world building of Cold Steel so good. As someone who painstakingly spoke to literally every single NPC at every single possible dialogue change CS just hit right.
