From where does this narrative come from? When I played it in 2004, gameplay was the reason I liked it so much and everyone agreed. It wasn't any worse than other third and first person RPGS at the time. Sure it had jank but combat and abilities were really fun. Slow motion spells, summons, mind control, melee and weapon combat were fine.

Holy fucking revisionism. When it originally came out it's a half-finished broken mess, it's kinda like cp2077 at launch, but in 2004. They tried to patch it, but they eventually straight up abandoned it. It became a cult classic much later. Nowadays you have to install the community patch, and even then it's recommended to straight up skip portions of the game because they're unfinished / barely playable.

Well the guns are still usable in single fire mode. Melee can become almost useless if you keep spamming the same combo especially at lower levels since enemies will block more.

I didn't even know about the fan patches and still loved the game despite the issues (which were mostly random crashes after a couple hours and a few parts that might softlock).

Nah I don't recommend doing that. I think the combat is more unbalanced in certain sections and could use some tweaking but straight up skipping them still takes something away IMO.

Gangrel can go one of two ways. The most obvious way is Protean+Fortitude war form. The other way is going stealthmode using Bloodsucker Communion to OHKO most enemies, using Pestilence to handle crowds, and spamming Burrowing Beetle to rapidly plummet your blood and trigger a Frenzy if things get REALLY bad. The highest Intimidation check in the game is 8, and Intimidation compliments most Brujah/Gangrel play styles. The soft cap for Research is 6, which leads to plenty of free dots. Stealth also isn't useless, it's Dexterity that's largely useless because of how easy it is to get blood back for using Bloodbuff. The only reason to put points into it would be to do the Poster quest chain for Gary.

In my personal experience, Hacking IMMEDIATELY loses any value after finding the phrase for DMP in Hollywood. Someone else may tell you otherwise, but that's been my experience. Lockpick 10 lets you skip large portions of Ventrue Tower, so it stays useful throughout.

Jack tells you during the tutorial that you should at least have some basic knowledge to use guns even if he prefers melee and mentions the shotgun being a threat.

Despite complaints about combat the game is pretty forgiving. Just using Blood Buff and your fists will work well on most enemies too. You have to kind of go out of your way to not put any points into defense stats/Disciplines to really get screwed over. The auto-level will prioritize melee or guns but it still ends up putting some points into both.

IIRC the True Patch Gold did have an initial version that was the Unofficial Patch with extra changes stripped out. This is probably the biggest example of Troika's genius design going misunderstood by Wesp and other midwits.

First of all, by "vendors", you just mean Trip - no one else in the game sells skill books.
The reason why he sells those books is because his store is one of the first places players will visit in the entire game. He literally runs the shop downstairs from your apartment, it's hard to miss him.
Now, the books are so cheap to encourage players to buy them with the money they just took from their desk drawer. What happens to most players next is the disappointing discovery that they can't read them because their threshold is over three pips from minmaxing character creation a few minutes ago, and thus the book is worthless. This is a very important lesson to teach right when the game begins because it explicitly tells the player "you need to build yourself as at least somewhat of a generalist, do not specialize or you will be penalized".

Thanks to Wesp misunderstanding and changing this AND MANY MORE aspects of the core design, we have a generation of Bloodlines players who unironically say stupid shit like "It's alright but the game never teaches you to put points into combat", when the reality is that the Unofficial Patch is fundamentally very different to Troika's official 1.2 version.

I feel like you're overthinking this. Trip only sells two books. Minmaxing in character creation is definitely the most cost effective choice and then afterwards you put points in other stuff because the first few levels. It's just those two skills you get screwed on, but that just means you minmaxed wrong, not that minmaxing is bad.

The encouragement to generalize only really starts later on, becaude the point cost is so high for dominishing returns or subpar active skills. It's not at all the the case at the start of the game.

In PnP it's definitely useful , or the very least funny, for your darling character to be "very good" at a niche within the group. You just don't want that talent to be to the exclusion of everything else.

It's dependent on your Story Teller but in general Exp comes a lot slower in the table top. It could take more than a dozen sessions to get to a character as advanced as what the player in Bloodlines gets and that's with a generous ST

Typically the tabletop is a lot more fixated on the character you are and the characters you meet, the interactions and whatever weird shit you get your hands on. You get 3 dots for Disciplines at start. Learning the 1st dot costs 10 experience, then it's x5. So it's always best to go 1/1/1 in starting Disciplines exp wise. So it would be 5 experience to get Auspex 2 and 50 to hit Celerity 5.

In total you would need 181 experience to hit that. but that doesn't count Freebies you get at chargen.

I don't have as much of an issue with the Venture tower, most of the enemies in it are human.

I've been going through the game files recently and found out it's pretty easy to adjust enemies. I thought of doing a small balance patch where some of the tankier overused enemies are toned down a bit. Mostly just slightly nerfing the vampires in the Sabbat hotel, the big three-headed enemies in the sewers, and the mooks in Ming's temple. IMO those are the only ones that really make the game feel a bit slow even if you're a maxed out combat character with no difficulty. Also reducing Ming's massive health pool a bit too, her health is almost 50% higher than the boss with the second most health.

It gives you +2 with no ceiling, whereas original Bloodbuff gives you up to 5 (so, if you already have Strength 5, you don't gain additional Strength from Bloodbuff). What this means is that new characters are heavily nerfed when it comes to early game combat (needing to waste dots to get Melee Combat 4 that would've been given for free once Downtown) with the Plus patch. It also means that characters have to decide whether to invest in combat or Lockpicking to explore the changes the Plus patch makes, which again hurts a new character and the entire experience.

It's missing a lot of Merits and Backgrounds, so keep that in mind. Also make sure you're satisfied with what you've got before you Toggle Freebies Mode on, there's no go backsies.

It's fairly easy to just remember, imo, that you start with 1 in all Attributes, 1 in all Virtues, and you get 7/5/3 attribute dots, 13/9/5 ability dots, 7 virtue dots, and 3 (4 in Dark Ages) Discipline dots at chargen. Then Humanity is Conscience + Self Control while Willpower = base Courage. But I think the default character creation rules are *bad* and haven't used them in my games for years. I just bite the bullet if I join other games and try not to minmax too hard, unless it's just that kind of game where every enemy has 5 in all attributes and celerity 5 in which case it's vampire superhero time and I'm going to dual wield Mac-10s with the Ambidextrous Merit.

Oh and as far as older versions, you can just add extra abilities like Security and Research at the bottom, but it only allows up to 11 skills in each and not 12 like 1st edition. It's squarely using v20 modern revised as a base. If you're using Dark Ages it's mostly transferable, just remember that firearms is archery, drive is ride, that kinda thing. It does lack Dark Age exclusive Merits however.

Sorcery is basically just "The Way Things Work" but that requires years and decades and lifetimes of studies and it's very awkward since it all has to be ritualized, so unless you're part of a Sorcerous Order or get recruited by one you'll never accidentally your way into Sorcery. Mages have parasitic Other beings attached to them and warp reality on their behalf, it's not true fundamental Human power, don't listen to their lies.
