It's completely insane that basedllennials ever considered this a bad game. The werehog sections are completely inoffensive action gameplay, and the day stages are hype as fuck. The sun medals are just well hidden enough that it's satisfying to find them without having to look them up in a guide. The setting and OST have yet to be surpassed in the series.

Werehog stages run on for too long, with that damn battle music, and rely on platforming with instant-death pits for its challenge.
I don't think I ever died from running out of HP as Werehog, but dying because the game decided your stretchy arms are not locking onto that ledge, countless times.

The recomp with mods fixed a lot of the problems I had with the game, I still have few nitpicks with it but overall it's an enjoyable experience now.

Biggest problem the game had was not being well optimized on 360 and REALLY unoptimized on PS3. With the game actually running well on newer Xbox's or the recomp it becomes a much better game. Still has some faults, that leveling system forces the werehog to not be as fun as he can be until later, and some of his levels could definitely have been shorter.

The game was nearly unplayable on PS3 and still ran ass at times on 360.
The Werehog has a lot of fundamental combat problems (no cancels or alternating between attack strings, enemies have too much health, moves are unlocked too slowly, Fury barely exists as a mechanic, battle music overrides the fantastic level music, constant artificial barriers to force you to play slowly, ranking system is ass) that fan mods had to fix.
The collectibles were too aggressive about blocking content.
The story was kinda ass outside of the beginning and ending (yes, this matters)

The PC port is a lot better than playing the game as it actually released. It got more hate than it deserved, but it was still not all that good.

Colors was really good. It's not Sonic at all, but it was a fun little platformer with great art direction and good music and strong level design. Posting the ugly ass broken remaster doesn't change that.

Yeah, playing through the recomp really made me appreciate the game more. I remembered lightly enjoying it, even the Night stages to a degree, but the recomp fixed my biggest problems with the game and made me genuinely enjoy it.
Played a lot of Sonic games, Unleashed (Recomp) is the first time I've ever honestly wanted to S Rank stages and man, it was satisfying to do so. Only one I didn't get around to was Eggmanland but FUCK Eggmanland.
DLC Stages were also a lot of fun, never played those before. Almost felt like a kaizo hack at times, crazy that those are official.

Most of the 3D Sonic games are like this under the surface. Heroes is way more fun when you mod in SA2 physics and remove the plastic sheen. Shadow's game is still kinda fucked with the fan mod, but it's kinda fun. Generations and Forces are significantly better with fan-made control overhauls.

No saving 06 or Lost World though. And Frontiers is still pretty ass even with heavy modding.

There is no modding of 06's physics. There is no 06 code there at all. It just has the assets, nothing else. Adjusting what was already there is very different from creating something from whole cloth. When you make Heroes have less ridiculous acceleration, you're only putting a modifier on the existing game systems, tweaking it. Stuff like P-06 is just an entirely different game system altogether.

It's like saying Frontiers is Sonic Adventure 2 just because it has Radical Highway and Metal Harbor's level geometry.

Okay, and the main point was base 06 was shit down to its base systems and mechanics, and better iterations on that are equal to mods, if not better because it's new systems that aren't optimized like dog shit. Whether it's modded 06 or a new engine and code made from the ground up, it's a better version OF 06.

You can make any "game" better by just making a new game reusing its assets. The point was that you can't adjust Lost World or 06. You have to make a new game. Adjusting some variables can't improve them meaningfully. It has to be ground up in their case

Unleashed deserves the rep it gets.
Day stages are kino, and are still some of the best boost stages in the series, given how long boost has stuck around for. Everyone knows that though which's why nobody complains about the day stages.

DLC day stages are also very fun and well designed; it's a shame there aren't more day levels that amp up the difficulty aside from jungle joyride and eggmanland.

Werehog does bring down the game because the night stages aren't as fun as the day ones. Werehog combat has little depth, enemies and bosses are simplistic and forgettable, levels last way too long even when you skip all the optional fights, the stretchy limb platforming is a cool idea though.

Instead of doing Werehog, Sonic Team should have made night stages be a gimmicky/harder version of the day stages.
Following the concept of act 1/2 in the genesis games and hero/dark in adventure 1/2 (and by extension heroes and shad05)

If Sonic Team really wanted to commit to the Werehog, the combat should have had more depth at a minimum. There's a reason people like the Werehog combat mods so much, and it's because vanilla Werehog is braindead simple, which makes him boring

Am I the only one that unironically likes the Shad05 physics? The game feels much better than Heroes and the highway levels are satisfying as fuck to just zoom by all the fighting going on between GUN and the ayys.

I do wish there were more uses for the spindash, and rail grinding wasn't dumbed down more though.
Expert mode is too damn good.

After you listed tweaked versions of games, with what's essentially fan patches. Getting uppity about it not being the true Sonic 06 experience, when I concede on that and explain that it's a fair and more fun facsimile. If the game didn't have a combat focus I'd like the vanilla controls. Reload makes him decelerate faster and turns the slide into a spindash, which I think fits the game a lot better.

Base game is a weird 6/10 because the good content's nice, but it forces you to engage with really bad extermination missions and won't let you level select Expert stages (and is too strict on unlocking them). Reloaded makes most of the enemy kill missions actually fun, which massively improves the game.
