picrel is unironically the last great game ever made
>starting area has 3 branching paths 2 of which lead to high level areas (modern devs consider this bad game design nowadays)
>game's atmosphere and presentation was so lo-fi that NPCs didn't even have speech animations
>genius game design that was unlike anything else at the time
it is a monument

It aged terribly especially since there were far better games released before, during, and after it.

Honestly? it does. I'm getting really tired of you "Dark Souls saved me fro my depression" transvestites acting like this game is better than it is because you identify with Gwyndolin or some bs.
It's a decent dungeon crawler with game shatteringly bad balance, that gets hard carried by sovl.

>terrible gameplay
>awful game design
>level design is a joke
>world building and lore don't matter since there's no story to motivate you to keep playing
It's mediocre and painfully shit to play nowadays.
Anonymous No.721192154 [Report]
I don't get the hype. It's as good as the yearly FIFA but nowhere above CoD slop.

OP might be wrong about best game but fromsoft is really the only company that made games with a soul, up to elden ring
that's the only reason why they got so much of a following. they knew how to make games that felt immersive and managed to create a special aura of fairytale misery
the real problem with games these days is there's no soul. last games I played that felt like it came from the heart were katana zero and hyper light drifter
heart machine got taken over by the DEI people so I know the other games had whatever humanity washed away, not sure about the katana zero dev

>you think a game became commercial successful because of soul
You know normalfags buy the same soccer or shooting game ever year right? They don't share your values. The reason souls blew up is its commitment to (mostly) fair difficulty, during a time where games were getting streamlined for mass appeal. Hence all of the marketing and paid shilling tunnel visioning on that aspect.
>egirls beating it on DDR pads
They do that because they're posers that want game cred for beating le uber hard game. Not because they care about the soul. Every journalist that rates these games well does so for gamer cred, to prove they're not one of "those" journos. It's all about difficulty.

The biggest ball drop in all future games is the loss of atmosphere. DS2 kind of has it in majula, but it falls apart as soon as you start warping everywhere.
DS1 being interconnected so thoroughly, plus the attention to ambience, helps sell it as a real place. Even the second half areas people bitch about have some level of immersion I just don't feel in later souls games when sitting around the bonfire.

Bloodborne is better.

People will cope and say they don't just spam dodge in dark souls. At least Bloodborne was built around dodging and parrying.

Dark souls 2 was the only souls game that truly punished you for creating a dodging spam character and people hated it.

Dark souls 2 simply just isn't fun. I always do a shield build on my first run of souls game, then drop it once I better learn the enemies movesets. Even as a shield user in DS2 that game is just not fun.
Bloodborne is good, but build variety is pretty low and most weapons are locked behind the DLC. So its replay value is pretty kneecapped, plus being stuck on a 15 year old console with Sony refusing to let FROM port it.

there are games that are timeless classic and there are games that are not

>soulsfags credit Miyazaki with creating it all from the ground up when all he contributed is combat
>as Miyazaki pumps out more games they become more and more combat focussed
Crazy how they still haven't pieced it together.

the difference between HL1 and DS1 is that the first one looks janky but still plays great,
while DS1 looks arguably better but plays like absolute jank. so which game actually aged poorly?

Why? Isn't the staple of every fun rpg to introduce some strong level 30 giganigga at the beginning of the game so you look forward to coming back at level 50 and STOMPING it?

>L1/R1 split: each hand independently matters, left arm and right arm treated equally (so obvious yet... name one game did this before)
>Weapons bounce off walls, making positioning and spacing part of combat
>DS1 hub lets you access late-game areas right from the start
>Starting class plus gift system, with key items like the Master Key opening new routes early
>Sheer volume of memorable monsters, each with elegant design
>Architecture as storytelling: grand, oppressive, and interconnected structures
>Minimal babble and handholding, show don't tell
>Lore fragmented through items instead of exposition dialogues and cutscenes
>Entering new area: area title with iconic vista
>Interconnected world: seeing other places in distances
>Mechanics are deliberately obtuse, rewarding discovery and experimentation, pre-wiki meta spoonfeed
>Unique online mechanics: helpful/deceiving messages, blood stains, hearing rung bells, covenants, summon, pvp, etc.
>Incredible level design and cruel enemy placement: Anor Londo archers, Capra Demon...
>Trap design: Sen's, mimics, illusory walls, rafters, narrow ledges, slopes, fall off pits
>First Titanite Demon fight can be skipped, non-linearity, risk vs avoidance
>Unique encounters: Hydra in the lake, Moonlight Butterfly in the forest, Havel tower, Gwyndolin endless arena, Red Dragon blocking the bridge... extremely evocative fantasy
>Zone gimmicks and unique adventure themes: lava/poison rings, invisible crystal paths, tomb darkness, rotating staircases, trapped in prison
>No fast travel early: trapped at the bottom of Blighttown, oppressive
>Getting cursed in the Depths: punishing but unforgettable
>Vertical level design: Blighttow, Great Hollow... feeling of always descending deeper into abyss
>Optional secret areas: Painting, Ash Lake
>Iconic cursed world, dead Soulkeeper, Crestfallen, Solaire, Patches, etc.

>Comfiness of Bonfires, respite
>Every boss arena with its own unique geometry and context
>Genius of the Estus system, balanced with corpse runbacks, unique
>Enemies can be avoided once layouts are learned: mastery over repetition
>Slash, pierce, smash, holy damage types all meaningfully different
>Huge variety of world gimmicks: Anor Londo revealed as an illusion, dark version hidden beneath
>Big tittied goddess figure contrasted with the truth of deception
>Sif’s limping: mechanical, emotional, and narrative resonance
>Shortcuts as revelation: elevators, ladders, tying areas together
>Sound design as mood: area title chimes, ambient dread, silence as tension
>Seeing interconnected zones in the distance: the world as one continuous organism
>Memorizing layouts like Undead Burg: place as character, as much as any boss
>Forgetting shitload more gimmicks and mechanics that no other games were doing at the time either, spells system, the backstab, kick, shield bash, weight system, poise system, active use of shield block vs parry vs dodge i-frames, stamina management, multiple endings with hidden secrets, obtuse quest triggers, sparse bonfire placement with meaningful shortcuts, NG+ cycles, no pause button, shitload of equipment variety, environmental storytelling like picking up new gear through previous fallen heroes and tied to the current level specific dangers, iconic YOU DIED death screen, unique boss weapons, crystal lizards, being able to kill NPCs and world being indifferent about it, systems like Humanity and World Tendency and super obscure triggers based on how often you die, principle of making game harder instead of easier if you die, and that's not even going into ways that DeS was so creative and innovative first with bosses like Old Monk being pure meta genius, how it all came at the peak of AAA casualization and was such a pure light of true game design in the complete darkness and from a C-list studio no one expected to save gaming, etc. etc.
