I play 1 and 2 more often than that, but I still have only finished 3 once.

Back in my day, Reapers were called Shivans, mass relays were called jump nodes, Protheans were called Ancients and Turians were called Vesudans.

There's a lot of major reasons 3 is bad.
>uglier than 2. A lot of familiar faces become derpy
>REALLY long mission chains you're stuck in until you complete them

>everyone introduced from 2 was sidelined, as if because of an internal dispute at Bioware
>Jack looks horrible with hair
>Jack is "all better now" after 6 months
>humanity sides with the 15 batarians that are left instead of Shepard over Arrival
>the inventory and weapon mod system are gay
>most of the reaper assimilations don't even resemble their races outside of banshees and marauders
>a literal evil twin arc. I'm surprised he didn't have a goatee
>a lot of weird hubs for worlds (all the different disjointed locations on the citadel, the different drop points on major worlds, etc)
>Shepard has seen countless people die in front of him and at his hands, a lot of them children. one kid that spoke one line traumatized the fuck out of him, and led to the gay dream sequences and the ending

To be fair to the ending, it sucked, but it didn't notably suck more than the rest of the game.
Most of the story problems stem from the fact that the reapers were really a one off enemy in 1, and they tried to make it a trilogy. Had they just completely abandoned them in 2 and moved on, 3 probably would have had a chance to be better.
The game ends up being a mess of a story and a bunch of busywork to gather war assets. Some stuff like Taking Back Omega was cool, but it also fagged out by killing Nyreen so she wouldn't be this unexplainable presence in the main game.

Shivans weren't that big of a threat. They show up with shields and powerful weapons, but humans adapt within one mission. The big things were scouting the Lucifer and then bombing it in subspace at the end.
They tried a similar concept with the Nephilim in Wing Commander Prophecy, but the Nephilim were just a new threat, not a more powerful one. Still a good game, but the Nephilim were pointless.

yeah of course they would especially considering the notion that killing all those batarians bought them a handful of months in which nobody did anything to actually prepare for the reapers. doesn't help that the game contrives it's way into making sure Shepard loses all the time they could've had to warn the batarians in time, so from the outside it looks like a Cerberus Agent hijacked a space rock and blew up one bazillion batarians

I played through the trilogy last year for the first time as a soldier on the easiest difficulty because I assumed the gameplay was ass and the important part was everything else.

What should I pick when I replay it this year on normal mode?

even 1 has it's contrivances. I've pointed this out before but there's really no reason why only Liara ever probed Shepard's brains for the visions after he got a face full of beacon. if the setting was properly written and realized a group of Asari researchers would've under order of the Asari councilor mind probed Shepard immediately on arrival to the citadel, but seemingly nobody cared about the contents of the beacon despite their entire civilizations being built on the back of tech acquired from previous beacons, even though we're told very explicitly how important the Eden Prime beacon could be 5 minutes into the game.

Final battle is Metal Cooler.

2 should have been about Shepard running around the galaxy as a Spectre putting out fires while trying to shore up the galaxies defences foe the Reaper invasion, Revan style.

I really liked the side quests, even if they were reusing most of the assets.

All the shit Shepard sees from Cerberus' projects is just mentioned in a fucking line at the begining of 2 in "you guys do bad stuff" and then "they are bad but they care".

They just got rid of most RPG elements the first game had instead of improve them.

Ending aside, I truly think that 3 is a masterpiece. I'm not saying it doesn't have other problems (LE GETHERINOS being the biggest). But the way it ties up all the main subplots in a neat little bow was masterful. And the combat is way better than 2 or 1, particularly for biotics. Biotic explosions all day.
