This is some behind the music shit ignore the theme was someone actually playing the hollow knight games and then FOTM fags trying to hop on and get clout. I think I usually hang out about an octave below you, but the guest verse works great at the upper end of my range.

Meanwhile most lines are totally changed to fit the new topic.

It's actually very easy to do.
Sometimes one will fall into it habitually.
One has to just go back over their song periodically and ask "is there a better thing I can be doing here?"
"What percent of the lines mean the same thing as the original?"
The easiest way to avoid it is changing the focus of a song. If you're parodying a love song, and the parody is not a love song, you can avoid it more easily.
However, if in your new context a line takes on a completely new meaning, leaving it can be brilliant.
For example, if someone were to take the song "Stalemate" from the Death Note Musical, and change the title to "Jailbait", make it about someone lusting over characters like Selphie Tilmitt or Lyn from FE7 that people forget are canonically underage, leaving the line "Clock is ticking let's just do it" would take on a completely different meaning in that context. Especially if the L analogue was a fed appointed to monitor the Light analogue.

I loved the idea from a few years ago where someone suggested writing Horoscope For Today about the original 12 Smash roster. You could cover the full roster without any room to spare and you wouldn't even need to know Smash 64 to get the song, fucking everyone knows mario and pikachu.

I have to agree with the other anon that the Pokemon lyrics this year are not really good. They don't seem have anything to say so it's essentially just filler lyrics. The original song is a strict story of the singer going through every horoscope and telling jokes about them. The parody starts listing Poke regions and then obviously runs out of them and has to start naming spinoffs. It leaves large chunks untouched out of laziness.

yeah, there's a big issue with stuff like the quoted block earlier where the verse has 11 lines and you only changed 2 of them. It's not just recognizable but essentially the same song for that whole section.

Well that's a flaw in itself, don't pick a topic so similar that you can't change anything. That means the original song is already the song you want, there nothing for you to do. Pairing a topic and original song is a skill in itself and there are good and bad pairs.

Weird Al ain't turning a song about being a gangster into a song about being a mobster, he's turning it into a song about being Amish. He gets to keep some of the song alone when he does that because the warped context alone adds humor to the lines that aren't changed. It's lazy to keep lines alone because they're already what you want and witty to leave lines alone because it twists the meaning of them.

The Saya song this year is really impressive at that imo. The context is completely different but in a way where a lot of the song's words and lines can still be used but in an ironic echo sort of way. A line about lust turns into a line about Stockholm's syndrome, calling someone an angel turns from praise to haunting, focus on a voice turns from necessary because the song is about a phone call to necessary because the plot of the game involves the character only hearing 1 other person normally. There's a dozen parallels between the original song and parody and none of them are "well the topic is similar so it's left alone".
