Character customisation is honestly one of the more important factors in a game to me. There are some games that are supposed to be really good that I've just never got into because the character designs didn't appeal, or I couldn't make my own character.
And conversely there are probably some games that I've given more time than I really should have just because I really liked making my own characters.
It's not even a self insert thing, I never make "myself" in a game.

Yeah, I can make exceptions in cases where the story revolves around a specific character and it's written with them in mind, though again that can be a dice roll on whether I'm interested in them enough to take part.
