It was trying to be Final Fantasy Tactics (story wise), but without Matsuno. It didn't quite work, especially since they also wanted it to be corny action-film-dialogue at parts.
And besides, a dark fantasy story works better in something like a Tactics game where the focus is on bigger number of units than a no shit action game. It might've been better in a true RPG, but even then I'd think it'd be a bit too dark throughout to be enjoyable in a JRPG format. Unless they went full CRPG-style, which they never would.

To be fair, that's pretty much all of FFXIV. ARR was obviously copying Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean and various previous FF games. The difference is, ARR wasn't trying to be serious and deep. Heavensward and later started to act like they were deep and series. With fans acting like they were the best writing in media history (while being even worse with the copying). So yeah, I guess it was just like FFTactics.

Well, as much as I make fun of them, in the very early days (NES/SNES), most people didn't know where FF got their influences from outside of Star Wars. They didn't notice the Never-Ending Story, Gundam and Dragon Quest influences because they didn't know about them or the English localization covered them up or we didn't get games like FF3 and 5.

FF16 is game that fights the player every step of the way towards fun. The RPG system is hardly present and the action gameplay suffers for it and vice versa.

And the moments where you have to talk to the historian about the kingdoms and it just cuts to a map of the kingdom while you listen to past events that never matter to the plot or side-quests? Terrible. Why should the player care about the politics of the lands when life altering events that occur do nothing for the lands? The world just talks about the growing resistance and instability but they're indifferent towards it.

I consider the stagger system in FF7R a better implementation compared to how it was shoehorned into FF16 because unlike FF16 each enemy has ways to push them into a pressure state to ramp faster into a stagger and the method to put an enemy into that pressure state varies depending on the creature you're facing. The added layer of the pressure state pushes you to engage with enemies in different ways and to consider equipping your PARTY with different abilities so you can cover the different methods each chapter is going to demand from you to earn those pressure states. In contrast the stagger bar in FF16 is just a glorified 2nd HP bar you need to clear before you can do meaningful damage to the red HP bar above it.

They got the bad writers and designers on it instead of the good ones. A classic blunder.

I don't like 15 but I still think it's better than 13. Its mess of a plot is slightly better realized, it doesn't circle around its plot points for quite as long, and it had the sense to wrap it up as it approached the end instead of opening up at the end.

Like, both are bad, and 13 is better on paper, but I liked 15 more in execution.

I wish 16 had more playable characters and they were all more important too. Jill was just Clives girlfriend. She had no agency. Joshua was more important, would have been nice to play the time skip from his perspective though. Could have done more with Torgal as a game mechanic. His heal is useless. I think if it had mid-battle character switching like Rebirth it would have been really cool. Imagine starting a combo as Clive and finishing it with Dion. Kino.

Also 90% of the story being fetch quests and side quests that have nothing to do with the main story. And then the main story has bad pacing, build up and pathos. The most interesting part of the story is after you leave the Game of Thrones/Skyrim wanna be area and get to the Zeal wanna be area.

Again, you're being really hyperbolic. There's a fuckload of terrible action and adventure games out there.

All three games have a very similar core problem: you barely interact with them. In 13's case this comes in the form of the game refusing to give you anything to do until the last fifth of the game and circling its initial plot over and over until it finally frees you on Gran Pulse, with a fun combat system you don't have enough time to enjoy and side quests that are very clearly "we made assets and had no idea what to do with them, here you go." 15 struggles to even make a coherent narrative and plops you in a barren sandbox until the last 1/5 where it zooms you through the rest of the plot. 16 refuses to make its content engaging by making enemies very static and not having any worthwhile content, just stringing you along to the finale.

15's only real strength is in the character writing, while 13 and 16 only really have mechanics. 16's mechanics end up more flimsy, but it at least lets you play with them earlier and gives you better access to "the good bits" (boss refights) through a menu. 13 is best on paper but won't *let you play it.* I would understand if you said 13-2 or Lightning Returns are better than 15 and 16. They are! But 13 just forces you to endure dozens of hours of not doing *shit* to get to the good bit. That's just indefensible.

Not really. And I'm someone who doesn't absolutely hate it (after chapter 7 when it actually starts). But I'm also not going to claim it's amazing. It's not even in the top 5 FF games. And the best FF game isn't even close to the best Suikoden, Chrono or Dragon Quest.

I liked 16 the most of the three. Yeah, it's boring, but the stuff it's doing is *still* more engaging than hours and hours of edging on Lightning and Snow and Hope and Sahz's bullshit. Like, conceptually, the 13 cast is more interesting, but the game just refuses to capitalize and all the shit with Barthandelus is like a bad parody of 8 and 10.

I won't disagree entirely with this. Level 5 has some of the most talented people in the industry and some of the worst designers and managers known to man.

Horii's good at his job, but he's not the sole soul. Koichi Nakamura and the rest of the Chunsoft team were a huge part of what made 3-5 classics.

FF14 and FF16 have sunk so much that the biggest fan website in Japan has changed it's name and mission statement from covering only FF14 to now covering random games in order to survive because FF14, Yoship's game sucks so much dick from Dawntrail.

I highly disagree. But there's no point arguing over opinions.

How do you even know who did what? And remember that not all the same people worked on each game. Some of the people who worked on 3 weren't there by the time 5 rolled around.

There's also more factors. Like a lot of the people who worked on DQ5 went on to leave Chunsoft and work on Pokemon. Specifically the first Pokemon game and later formed Genius Sonority to make the 3D games. And the Genius Sonority games are some of the worst. So it's not just who you have working on a game. There's some other factor. Whether it's time, funding or whatnot.

Dragon Quest VI and VII definitely seemed to have some problem with time or funding. But on the flip side, every FF game since 8 hasn't had problems with funding but keep varying wildly in quality. Usually for the worse.

12 and Tactics are the only games I care to revisit since their job system focuses on actual party building and gives you the flexibility for it (not Zodiacslop ofc).
