Isn't this selection bias at it's finest? Who'd even bother with surveys like these? I'd imagine like 90% of gamers wouldn't.
I don't buy too many games anymore, and a lot of the time it's when they're on sale, which is usually a few months after they come out.
But when you have millions of kids who only play GTA Online, Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft exclusively, it kinda skews the data.

See, this is the dumb part of the studio. With exceptions, I guess, someone who buys less than one video game a year is not a "gamer". You get a proper bell curve if you remove this group.
It would be like saying "33% of runners go out running less than once a year". If you run less than once a year you are just not a runner.

this would apply if the metric was CONSUMER of video games, something someone who has been through a single steam sale understands has absolutely fucking nothing to do with PLAYING video games.
PLAYING video games makes someone a "gamer".
BUYING video games makes someone a "consumer".
The interest of publishers and developers is where these two overlap with a preference toward consumers.

People like to shit on contemporary output but I think this is a lot more to do with backlogs, the prevalence of super time sink games like MOBAS that can suck thousands of hours away and still have a hypnotic grip on its players, and the overall ease of accessing the entire library of the past. What was once a trip to the game store to get whatever they physically had is now a click away. A 10/10 made today has to compete with every 10/10 that came before it more than ever.

Yes, some people exclusively run indoors. Some people argue running on a treadmill doesn't count because you're actually staying in place, but they are just too poor to run on an indoor track. For the people who only go outside to run once a year, probably only do that because it's for a half marathon.

Being a gamer or not is about how many games you buy, but how much you play games. You can still play a lot without buying new games constantly. To correct your running analogy, what you're suggesting is more like if a person only buys 1 pair of running shoes a year, they aren't a runner. Maybe they just have shoes that last.

I'm not defending the modern gaming industry but passion doesn't pay the bills nor puts food on the table and a lot of "high-end" games need investment to be made.
You might as well start complaing about every other industry if you care so much about "passion".

That said, modern games are a fucking wasteland and only a fucking retard would buy more than 1 game a year, most years I don't even think there's one game worth playing, let alone paying for. Current GOTY for me was a fucking cuck DRPG.
