The changes in accents are some of the biggest because to make them work, they completely changed the characters personalities or altered the tone of areas. Mermaids don't speak in rhymes in the original Japanese. Characters in that one town don't speak in faux Italian accents, repeating everything they said twice. And no one speaks French at the school. Etc.
These don't seem like big deals unless you know how the original version handled it. Rather than having everyone in the school speak in a French accent, the characters speak in different tones and styles. The headmaster speaks in a silly way, while the scolding teacher speaks in a serious, almost condescending tone. And the teacher behind the counter talks in a sultry way, making suggestive comments. This means every character has their own personality and character type. While in the English, everyone in the school is just 'le funny french, oui" Making them all the same personality and type.
Now magnify that over hundreds of characters across the world. In short, the original Japanese is actually the one with the "flavor" to it. Because there's a much more varied range of character personalities.
Beyond this, some other major changes are Sylv's personality, where there's more layers to his personality in the Japanese. THe citizens of Hutto don't speak in Haiku's. They speak a more formal/old version of Japanese, but otherwise speak normally. As not to kill the mood of the dramatic events in that story arc. The watchers in the sky DON'T TALK LIKE SCREAMING SPERGS. Which never made any sense because it's literally a plot point that they taught language to the humans below. And on that note, how are there dozens of different accents across the world when it's also a plot point that everyone in the world speaks one language? Do these people not even know how accents work?
