If you were to hand OoT (lets say an emulation on a modern controller) to a 12 year old avid gamer (who magically has no knowledge of zelda) at what point do you think they would get filtered?
I think Hyrule Field

For a 3D game made in 1998, it holds up surprisingly well and is completely playable like any other game. It might not outdo many modern games, but the fact that it's totally fine says quite a lot about just how much they got right. Hyrule Field is kind of empty, there have been more engaging "open" worlds both before and after, but it serves more as a hub than anything. I would say it's far easier to play for the first time in 2025 than Super Mario 64 whose camera fights with you constantly in the worst places.

A dungeon that's interesting but marred by inconvenience. The Ocarina of Time 3D version allows you to fast equip the boots which makes it far less cumbersome.

The limitations of early 3D is also why the game has the tone/atmosphere it does. And Nintendo's developers still haven't figured it out. They kept trying to replicate Ocarina but never figured out how to do it right.

Their pitch for Twilight Princess was literally "we heard you want the successor of Ocarina of Time and we made it. In fact, it's the best game we ever made." They said this right on the E3 floor when revealing it. And neither ended up being correct.

It's a good game and very fun, but I would argue that it's one of those games that looks better with that somewhat blurred effect given by old CRT televisions. If you play it on a modern television or with normal emulation, it kind of looks like blocky ass.

I'm an oldfag who loved all the Zelda games growing up, playing each of them soon after they came out, but I never owned an N64, so I never played either of those.
Do you guys know how decent those $15 USB N64 controller clones are? I was thinking of buying one, so I could emulate them and get a somewhat accurate experience, but then I also wonder if I should maybe just play the PC ports instead.
Anonymous No.722888575 [Report] >>722889125 >>722889734 >>722890207
>>722888081
their pitch for twilight princess was "we're sorry for the bait and switch between the tech demo and wind waker. we heard you that you want a game with serious graphics"

and even if they specifically said "successor", they were referring to timeline faggotry, because they were still riding that larp that they never really cared about to begin with.

every single zelda game (with the exception of what, the oracles?) has had its own specific gameplay defining gimmick that sets it apart from the other games. even totk reusing the entire map as botw has such dramatically different abilities that it changed how the game was played and approached. never ONCE have they tried to "replicate ocarina", and that is on purpose.

I can't imagine that they're very good at all. You're better off getting a Switch Gamecube controller or a real one with an adapter and then playing it through the PC port. That's what I use anyway.

>"we're sorry for the bait and switch between the tech demo and wind waker. we heard you that you want a game with serious graphics"
But they also invoked the Ocarina name as many times as they could during that E3 performance. As well as having tons of nods to it in the game. And they were clearly trying to go for the "dark, moody" style of Ocarina with Twilight Princess. They just failed, making a bunch of ugly muddy and blurred textures which was the popular style at the time.

Twilight was them trying to appeal to the Ocarina fans. But not actually understanding what they liked. Much like later Star Wars films trying to be like Empire Strikes Back, but not understanding what made it work.

I don't stealth segments at all but at least skipping Deku Palace's stealth section is as easy as just back flipping onto the door frame and doing a little parkour. I disagree with Zelda being super linear pre-BotW. You're just not being creative enough.

and yet they still had the wolf shit focus. every game is distinctly different, and they never intended to make "more of the same, but new/better"

they heard the tremendous amount of negative feedback over wind waker. they saw the continued praise for oot at the top of every chart (lmao delusional idiots). all they did was change the visual style for it. they literally, fundamentally do not believe in making the same game but new/better. like, its genuinely an oddity that they made galaxy 2. lip service with a focus on visuals means nothing compared to what they actually MADE.

yes, like i said, when they were still riding timeline faggotry. and fuck off with "songs from". zelda as a franchise reuses names, songs, places, fucking everything over and over. some cheap member berries do not a "replication" make. also, you're only talking about twilight princess, and ignoring the claim of "kept trying to replicate". you're only arguing once, and falling flat at even that.

There's intention and there's hardware limitations. Even at 240p the game ran at 20 FPS. so it's hard to argue that's the intended resolution. Nintendo would definitively have made it 480p at least if they could.

Controls are a bit awkward as was the style at the time.
Overall it's pretty comfy. as with almost all games after the shift to 3D for over a decade it's incredibly easy with the only difficulty coming from not knowing where you need to go if it's your first time playing, but for returning people that's not an issue so it makes for a good comfort game.

>>722890498
Sheesh, yeah, I think I'm going to look online at what layouts people are using for the PC port and then see if I can mod in the correct button icons for a standard Xbox/PS5/Switch Pro controller, so they display properly

OOT didn't use the N64's d-pad or the L button. The controller design just didn't allow for it.
I like using cross for A, square for B, d-pad for C buttons, R1 for R, and L2 for Z. Just feels the most intuitive.
