I played this after seeing some of you fags gush about it and it was mediocre.

Sort of yeah.
Combat's a little more melee focused, it has a limb based damage system with dismemberment that makes it feel a bit like a prototype of dead space in that regard.
It's not really scary but the insanity system has some funny and neat effects, and the story and setting is pretty novel.

Just started playing this and I'm a couple of hours in and yeah it plays like RE but the small stories feel more like an adventure/Tomb Raider game than a survival horror. Unless you're a complete shitter with the combat, you'll rarely see the insanity effects, so there's that. Not too bad so far though.

Oh, and the whole metal gear cast seems to be in this game for some reason.

This really sucks.
If you don't deliberately let your sanity drop you never get to see any of that stuff. I wonder why they even bothered putting so much effort into a system that is so easy to completely circumvent.

Only good thing? Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is an amazing game from the same devs.

It was pretty gay ass how you could lock yourself out of the best magic if you didn't loop back around in the intro level to get the rune in this game.

The setting and gimmicks are cool, but actually playing through it is a bit of a yawn. Although, the most important thing to note is: don't use the Recover Sanity spell unless you ABSOLUTELY need to. It's easy to deprive you of all the novelty and scares if you proactively keep yourself topped off, with the game making it easy to miss out even on the things that are guaranteed to proc with at least 1 pixel of Sanity gone.

Best way I can describe it is that it's one of those games that everyone should play, but it's absolutely NOT one of that games that everyone MUST play
