I just hope it's not bad enough that it sinks Obsidian, cause I liked Avowed and Pentiment and am looking forward to seeing what Josh Sawyer is working on next.

It's sad that Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky are behind this shit series, but I don't think it's their fault. It really is the working hands below them.

They are the Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer studio, they drove Chris out of the studio while Josh was mindbroken by the failure of Pillars 2 and is in semi retirement mode. At that point there's no reason for the studio to still exist.

TOW was that game I wanted to like but every time something was getting really going, it'd be over. Like taking the trip up the first hill on a roller coaster, only for the big drop to be 50 fucking feet. The writing was done so that stupid people just following quest markers could still understand what a choice meant if they ignored 90% of dialog (actually good choice considering the market but feels like a shit on the chest to me).

I expect a second helping of half baked ideas. I doubt it's entirely Cain's and Boyarsky's, but people with so much industry experience should know better by now.

I enjoy Tim's YT channel, and after listening for some time it's clear he is just a programmer with good video game design philosophy, not some master lore crafting author of video games. Just a smart soft man with high value technical skills doing a job. He worked on Fallout, but is very clear about how he alone did not do this. He sucks at writing dialog (self-proclaimed), and overall is genuine about his skillsets.

Sad this is the game series he is currently working on imo. Wasted talent.

avowed quests were well designed. i thought the story was good and pretty decent about making the player choices worth something compared to most video games. on par with new vegas, story wise. the weapon upgrade system sucked ass. open world was the right size lots of cool stuff to find

I only the played TOW base game once and never returned to it because the boredom had come down heavily on me during the game's back half and I had to force myself onward, with Christ-like determination, to the story's end, to my Golgotha. Did anyone play the DLCs and did they do anything to improve the experience?

Yeah the bullets themselves are lazy as fuck, people loved the shitload of ammo types in New Vegas.
So obviously the correct choice is to hyper-simplify the ammo types!

But Obsidian haven't made anything as disappointingly dull as Inxile's Torment: Tides of Numenera – without question the worst of the new wave CRPGs. The offense is doubled by their appropriating the Torment name and marketing the stupid, lazy thing as a spiritual successor to the celebrated classic. Fuck I'm still angry.

How did Inexile, the studio founded by ex-Fallout Tactics/BOS devs end up way better than the studio founded by the main Fallout devs? This seems wild to me. Yet, Wasteland 2/3 are way better than whatever the fuck nu-Obsidian have produced post New Vegas.
