We're not really at the point where we can simulate water efficiently enough in realtime for it to be used as a proper gameplay mechanic.
Water in games falls into a couple categories:
-A cheap gerstner wave sim (usually used for oceans)
-An pre simulated animation via an alembic cache, a flowmap or a flipbook (more advanced visual effects)
-A height field simulation (shallow bodies of water)

Sometimes a mix of all three are used but all of them are cheap tricks that have a lot of limitations.

we can make the educated guess that the devs didn't offset the sun left or right because why would they? so we're trusting the horizontal position and only offsetting vertically. the clearest example is pic related. the corner of the shadow on the boat floor is coming from a definite point. the white line is the actual shadow direction. so then wtf is the red line? the sun isn't really in its apparent position, as far as shadows are concerned. the gray line shows roughly where the sun should be to make the line straight.
