Is Borderlands 1 worth playing at all, /v/roskis?

Honestly, not really. I would've told you yes in 2009 but it's 2025 now and 4 offers a much better gameplay and varied world design. I guess you could enjoy it for its simplicity and the polished yet monotonic artstyle.

if you've never played it, it's a fun romp. but once you've played 2 and beyond 1 feels very rudimentary.
Anonymous No.722902898
yes, it's the best of them
I recommend playing as lilith, she's OP

No. Just play Borderlands 2 and pretend it's the only game in the series.

It's been long ass time since played it, but played replayed 2 recently and it felt outdated as fuck to play compared to 3. So I imagine 1 feels even worse. Haven't played 4 yet

Shittiest PC port I can remember.
Unresponsive menus that basically only worked with a controller, extremely narrow FOV requiring some awkward ini hacks to change, shitty laggy Gamespy shit for multiplayer. Screenshot triggered me bigly

It runs fine, the enhanced version memory leaks and will start lagging after you've played for 3 hours straight

it's pretty fun but it doesn't have the quality of life of BL2-onwards and is less up its own ass from a story/character perspective
it's worth it if you already know you like borderlands

People who like BL1 outside of nostalgia are genially autistic and retarded.
It's an ok game, play Lilith for faster travel (without exploits), game map is half empty and full of filler encounters.

I've never played Borderlands so I started with the first game.
I'm not playing straight for 2-3 hours so I don't know about memory leaks or crashes but so far I haven't encountered a single bug.
Everything is running fine without problems.

The only part I really don't like is having that lone skill point locked behind Moxxi's "Prove Yourself" mission for the Underdome. It's just tedious to pick it up and run through 75 waves of enemies.

Aside from that, it's not bad.

I just got done playing through it all + the DLC's and wanting to 100% it.
I stopped around the last DLC, and it's purely because the FUCKING AIM PUNCH IN THIS GAME IS RIDICULOUS.
The "accuracy" stat and the fact that your bullet will just miss until you get the profiency level up with that weapon type is also retarded.
Outside of that, it is still my favourite game in the series just because the music, atmosphere, and world design are fucking great.
Running the original version with the tweaks from the PCGW. Also, install a fast travel mod to save your sanity.

The original Borderlands 1 from 2009 is worth playing. The "remaster" from 2019 however is shit.

Performance issues and they backported all kind of stuff from later Borderlands games even when they don't fit in the first game.

You shoot with the gun's displayed accuracy without any skill in a gun type. As you gain skill levels, the crosshair becomes more focused. The real payoff is the bonus damage as enemy HP increases.

None of the Borderlands games are, but 1 especially is a "you had to be there" thing. 2 improved on it in pretty much every way and the only reason you would like 1 over 2 is if you just got sick of the formula by the time 2 came out.

Gotta remove the cutscenes and the Twins' ECHO chatter, though. I can handle Jack popping in once in a while but the shit in 3 was continuous.

In gameplay yeah. Also maps are too big with too many encounters. Not enough enemy variety, it gets super stale to get through them.

Well, no harm in trying, but it's pretty monotonous. No enemy variety, low environment variety. The DLCs are much better.
Anonymous No.722904553
Not really
All the guns feel the same until you get to max level and you farm legendaries
The enemies are the same from start to end and can shred you in a second on higher levels
The story is basic as well so you won't miss out on anything important if you skip it

Story is better than the other games, it's simple and it's not filled with retarded memes every 2 second dunno about the dlcs
i also prefer the shooting in this one compared to 2 simply because dismemberment makes weapon feel "powerful" even early on
just try it, you do need dxvk and some ini tweaks to change some stuff, it's all on pcgamingwiki

I had fun playing through it with my buddy but I think they're all pretty weak.
None of the games ever feel as smooth mechanically as the halo series despite also being a console-focused FPS series. There's a jankiness and closed-in feeling with all the invisible walls and awkward interactions of animations. Whole series feels rough instead of feeling "AAA"

Anonymous No.722904649
>>722904227
Yes, proficiency on some weapons does state it boosts the accuracy stat too. I thought it was the overall stat, not just the crosshair/bloom
either way, the system is retarded as fuck and feels bad but I can understand why they put it in considering how many design ques they took from DnD when making the first game.

Back when I was playing looter shooters, I thought it was one of the best. Only beaten by 2 in terms of gameplay. Not sure how it compares to modern offerings. Always thought Borderlands was better than Destiny and The Division, and the wave of eastern looter shooters hadn't started yet.

There barely is, and what is there is bad and disappointing. One of my worst memories of BL1 is being hyped for some life-changing super challenge, you enter and area and the ground fucking trembles, it's so ominous... And then you fight some dumb big animal and kill it in a second (Rakk Hive). What the fuck.

Or how about the """antagonist""" who appears for a brief moment only to get chomped by Gene Worm from Opposing Force. Bah. Say what you want about BL2 being full of memes, but at least the antagonist does a proper job of making you want to kill him. And you fight dragon in the end instead of shooting at big vagina.

1 is fine, it's just older and a bit clunkier but if you like 2 for the gameplay and loot you will like 1 too. The story is less in your face, which is an improvement, and the atmosphere of the wasteland is great. You can do some very fun builds, on characters like Roland and Mordecai you can boost your firerate to absurd levels.
