Around the 2010s publishing houses started to increasingly aggressively gatekeep out fantasy authors that didn’t check a diversity box, effectively meaning that anyone without their foot in the door just couldn’t get published. Instead they started throwing money away at literary Oscar bait candidates based on diversity, which while successful at gaining accolades couldn’t sell shit. I’m talking five figures average sales numbers, most of which was under 50k
This was bad, but they were kept afloat by the remaining big names who could reliably pull in sales. Then GRRM convinced a massive chunk of those big names that they too could sit on their ass doing fuck all and still get by on stringing fans along.
This meant that publishing houses were basically being kept alive by the residual sales from the giants of the past. Things were looking dire, especially since ebooks and self publishing meant that those problematic authors actually had an avenue to get themselves going again and compete. Sure most of it was and continues to be crap, but so is everything they publish and it cost a hell of a lot less.
