>this hobby is over for me, games do nothing for me anymore, everything's fucking trash
>play 90's game I've never played before
>not only it's excellent, it makes me feel something for playing a game for the first time in at least a year
So this is true, huh. Holy shit, modern gaming is so bad. What the fuck happened? I really should start exploring old stuff more.

What I like about older games is that they fell different from each other, there's some individuality to them. Now every game plays safe, every remake tries to look like any other game in the genre instead of doing it's own thing.

There also existed games that were just as dogshit and broken back then too. They just used to get laughed at instead of making millions off of the retarded masses

It was somewhere around when GTA 4 was released, when video games started transforming from niche hobby, to actual business products that you can make money from. From that point onwards, majority of companies started making games purely for money, and those with soul slowly got old and left, and are now in the minority.

Just go full-on into emulation, lil dude.

As for the state of the industry, vidya died in 2006. Sure there's always some good stuff coming out no matter what era it is, but 7th gen fundamentally changed the industry in a truly awful way, and it never really recovered. We are living in a post-7th gen, post-Gamergate, day-one patch, paid microtransactions, always-online world. Shit's pretty much fucked.

Point-and-click are the worst excuse anyone has ever had for offering digital entertainment. They are all bad. ALL of them. It's insane how an entire genre can be bad, but these guys managed it. And yes, there are point-and-click games with artistic merit, but you can say that about anything.
If you find all games boring, but fall in love with a point-and-click, then you definitely don't like video games in the first place and you're right not to waste your time on them.
Point-and-clicks are as far removed from more traditional video games as visual novels are. They are an art form in their own right, a unique branch that has little to do with "normal" video games, with the difference that visual novels are at least good here and there, which is impossible for point-and-clicks.

I always say this, but the reason is simple: People had to make their own answers back then. As the hobby and business evolved certain expectations happened owing to prior experience and customer demand, and so it became harder to come up with something different that doesn't toast the fanbase.

why are you so equating the state of a 50 year old industry to what's coming out today? You're enjoying older games, why are you upset exactly? You have more games to try out to last you your entire lifetime at your fingertips already

When I shit on modern games I'm not talking about the derivative trash or incomplete buggy shit.
Game design philosophy in general has been shit since the mid 2000s. Quest markers, data-driven design over unique encounters and mechanics, etc.

Some indie games are still very good, and might I add that emulation and de-compiling projects are taking off like a bat out of hell. Paving the way for an entire influx of retro games into the freeware "market." It's a gold rush of old is new, and it's looking good.

Even the slop back then is better than 95% of what's coming out today. Blood Omen 2 is the most comfy adventure game I've played in a long time.

What are some good ones that aren't arcadeslop or rogue-lite/rts? I like adventure games.
Tormented Souls was pretty good.

Point and clicks still get made and some are good. Primordia is on par with the best 90s games in the genre. Fran Bow is recommended if you want some edgy shit.

Ninja Saviors is based as hell, and a great game. It's a beat em up remake of an old SNES title. Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is a great adventure game to try out if you haven't played it yet.

Zoomers don't want to admit it but with the introduction of huge companies, gaming has become just another angle for making money. Games are made with profit first in mind and thus the quality and SOUL takes the backseat.

Most of their existing customer base will buy their games no matter what.
And since that's the case, aiming for an entirely different target audience is best way to increase your customer base.
Unfortunately for the people making those decisions, the "modern audience" doesn't actually exist, no matter how hard their marketing departments try to gaslight them into believing they do.
Anonymous No.722921001 [Report]
>>722909316
>they didn't care if it sells or not
they definitely do care, because if the game had sold well that would have been pure profit for the company. their dev and marketing costs were covered by the globohomo investors with no obligation to pay these costs back, so every penny they make from the game goes straight into their pockets (minus whatever percentage of the gross profits was agreed to be kicked back to the investors). Additionally, the globohomo investors have started to pull out of the games industry because of all these mega flops. They've been throwing money at the games industry with the goal of spreading their pinko commie faggot tranny nigger propaganda to the masses. well that's not happening, these games have instead become a laughing stock as title after title bombs, and they're bleeding money with no results to show for it. that's why we've seen dozens of big studios implode over the past few years, as they've become bloated with all this free money being handed to them, and with it now gone they are not sustainable.

they repeatedly make the false assumption that their core audience will still buy the games, so trying to reach new audiences by having the MC say "trans rights are human rights" every 5 minutes is a safe bet.

Triple A these days just means "third person or first person guy walking around with a gun or a sword", walking around is a third of the gameplay, another third is spent fighting, and the rest is cutscenes and dialogue.
