There's a grace period after deadline, but it's uncertain. Definitely make sure you're balancing the sound right, because I remember back when I first edited I made the backing track too quiet on a song, and I've felt bad about it since.

Until a couple years ago the deadline was the 15th and people didn't work past it. It recent years we've decided to spit in the jannies faces and tell them we'll stay as long as we want, and we haven't been killed for it yet so I'm sure people will tempt fate yet again.

We're probably aiming for a stream on the 25th this year, which means if you don't care about the janny's wrath everything really should be locked in by the 20th so the compiler can compile the files and lyric timers can lyric time without having to work 16 hours shifts over just a couple days to get it done. But imo any song we're working on past the 15th should be looked at as a failure of the community and our legacy and an affront to the moderators that kindly let us stay here despite us breaking rules of the board. I remember the years we were banished from /v/ by the mods and don't want to relive that but I guess not many newfags remember those days so they think it will never happen to them.

If we get told to fuck off from /v/ again it could unironically spell the death of the musical. We do not have the manpower or dedicated planners that we used to, I'm sure if people one day just can't find the /v/tm thread on /v/ they won't even know to check /vg/. Tldr for anyone that knows how to edit, consider doing it now. It is not a joke that we do not have time on our side there, I have a feeling editors are gonna say "ok it's the 16th time to finally start editing now that I can't sing more" only to realize the pile is far too big for them to get through. A lotta songs are gonna get bad edits due to lack of time this year if we just sit on 30 unedited tracks day after day until the final 3 day rush where that balloons to like 100 tracks.

iirc in year 4-6 we worked primarily on /vg/ but still made /v/-threads every other day or so to get new anons on board. those were never deleted or anything, they just died because we didn't have nearly as dedicated bumpfriends around. weird thing is we still kept growing during that whole time. wasn't until after 6 shipped that the decline started. figured it was because of constant off-putting drama but now i'm starting to think it was a bigger cultural shift.

It's 2016, the website fundamentally changed permanently because of it. The whole Internet really. Pre-2016 the Internet was usually a casual thing to visit or a hobby and people just did stuff for fun. Post-2016 you can't do anything without floods of rage bait and shilling no matter where you are. You can't have a place to discuss video games without people spamming "Muslim man uses evil shock collar on dog!!" to try and radicalize others or enrage others, and you can't attempt to discuss "hey this game is kinda fun" without faggots spamming that you should die or you should buy an ad or spamming wojaks at you or spamming hate.

As a response basically the only way around such bad actors is increasing censorship or insular communities. People hate on discord, but you can actually have focused discussions with like-minded people there without a fag with a folder of racist wojaks and a VPN being able to terrorize everyone forever. It leads to hug boxes and everyone staying in their own bubbles but as long as there are hard rules for things like no politics and no infighting then it does allow some discussions even if it's not truly the same as like 2007 4chan where someone can make a joke about spilling chocolate milk and the randoms seeing it will play along and even the mods will have a sense of humor and join in because they aren't busy tracking down the guy spamming illega porn across 4 boards with his VPNs.

It's no shock 4-6 we're the years we fell apart because it's the years the Internet started falling apart.

yeah this year we sometimes go 30 minutes between posts and it doesn't kill the thread. that was unthinkable even a couple years ago. /v/ as a board is much slower now due to how many people never came back post-hack. it seems like the musical anons had some dedication because we have a pretty nice retention rate this year, some of the anons that aren't singan stopped in to explain they simply don't have time this year but look forward to next year.

desu demos don't really weed out much, the singer has to have shame to care. we have stuff on the finished sheet this year where the singer mistimed the line so poorly that they had to add entire new syllables into the line to make up for it that weren't in the lyric sheet, so it just sounds nothing like the original line at all now.

Usually when I mix anything I get the original vocals and the instrumentals side by side and if I don't get a studio quality instrumental I usually shit one out with UVR after downloading it.
From what I'm seeing in REAPER, the version you got with UVR now is faster than the version I have which is where the issue is.
Can you post the original song file so I can get the vocals from it for reference?

there's 200 tracks not finished this year like every year. we really can't perpetuate the cycle of "just take everything not done and bring it back next year". it makes the sheet a mess where a bunch of lyrics just aren't good and won't ever be done because people decided long ago that they don't want to do it. there's really no benefit to dumping something on the sheet with the expectation that you'll just use it as sloppy seconds next year, just make it fresh next year and maybe they'll even be new doom info to write into the track.

an editor might be able to fix that but in general it's a good idea to do a 2nd take and hopefully the noises are in different spots so the editor can mix a full song without the noises. personally when it happens to me I just note the lines with the noise and record just those ones again.

we're short on editors but this take is pretty good and if an editor hears noise I'm sure they know how to remove it. this audio's noise is not that bad so I'd say it's fine until the editor nitpicks at it.

nta but any time something is skipped in the process it's absolutely laziness. you know it doesn't improve the song to skip the rhymes, "it's not a big deal to skip this" is never anything except laziness.

in a system where we get 350+ lyrics submitted but only like 150 get sung, frankly the lazy songs deserve to get skipped. if you're hoping your song gets sung over 200 other songs, put the effort in to make yours well above average, because the average song doesn't make the cut in a just world where less than half are sung.

It might not be a great matchup if it's too similar yeah. I am sure it could work, but that requires being creative and high effort in the lyrics to make the new ones stand out. It can unironically be more work to parody a song with a too similar match, but the way to do it correctly is to take the time to personally look at every single line, without exception, and figure out if there's any way to inject some extra flavor, or lore, or storytelling into them. Not every line will be able to do that, but every line should be given scrutiny on if it's left alone because that's easy or if it's left alone because there truly is nothing better that can be done there.


I don't think it's unworkable, but the key there is work. are you going to put the work in?

there are many options for pitch:
1. just ignore the pitch of the original entirely and sing it as you, Weird Al is famous and great at this, he does not do falsetto any time he parodies a woman

You can always pick something that isn't really asking for serious singing skill.
We literally have a Happy Birthday song this year if you just want to record 20 seconds as practice and get mixed into the crowd.
There are songs like "Smash Up The Rocks" where the performer isn't even really a singer and it's a cartoon movie where you can mostly speak to the rhythm through the song. that can require a little charisma and having some fun with it though, especially if you want to imitate John Goodman and not just be you.
The Ren and Stimpy Log song turned into "Duke" is short and simple and you can probably be mixed into a group with others.
Laugh at Smashfags is another short cartoon one.

Overall the final goal is to have fun, if you get over the worry you can sing anything you want and it'll work out.

honestly I'd guess like 99% chance it's that weekend. nov is pushing it really hard, the jannies won't let us bum here 2 full extra weeks when we're not in season, so it means everyone leaving and then people just having to remember to return for the stream. the only way I can see it being nov is if the streamer themselves can't make the previous weekend work, if we can't get the edits done fast enough we'd just rush out barely edited ones rather than delay into nov when the deadline is supposed to be the 15th to begin with. we give some leeway now but if a full week of extra editing time isn't enough it means people just aren't doing the work and we need to get it over with.
no matter what the date is some people will have to miss it, but we do recordings now so at least there's always that.

yeah, never forget that until a couple years ago it was NOT a setup where people just left things to edit after the 15th. it was standard that we were done with essentially everything but art by the 15th. I think the extra editing time is fine because we can't put the cat back in the bag, but it feels like people are abusing the leniency when the point was not to cuck a few songs that got left over, not to add an extra week of content production to a project that already drags on a bit.

more than a few years ago we'd never call the 19th impossible. we'd do deathbattles on the 16th and have the 16th-18th for organizing and compiling because the actual files would be good to compile before the stream time. we'd know this was the goal so people would have prepped in advance to make it easier, rather than put stuff off to say "we'll do it later". that extra week is scope creep.

I can't lie I was worried this year. not because we got kicked to /vg/ for a few years, but because of the hack. the mod team lost a lot of people, and gained some new ones to replace it. Both have their pros and cons. I'll explain very briefly how to use an LRC generator online. The one I used was https://www.lrcgenerator.com/
For this particular one, you paste the lyrics into the text area then click 'Synchronize to music'.

You will be taken to a new page, in here you can load your audio track using the Audio button, and start the playback with the START button.

In order to mark which line is being sang, you need to click on the 'Next Line' button as the line starts being sung (click upon hearing something, not in anticipation for consistency with others), the lyric in the text area will be highlighted white letting you know the line was tagged.

You do this for the entire song then you wait it to end. I don't know if it was a bug that specifically happened for me or not, but the only way I could tell the song ended was because the timer on the now pause button stopped counting up.

From here, you should have reached the end of the lyrics you posted. You need to click 'Next Line' one more time and the button should now be replaced with a 'Get File' button which will download the .lrc file to your PC.

Now, I just extract the content by opening the .lrc file with a text editor (I use VSCode) and take only the timed lyric lines alongside timestamps and paste them into a new .txt

(TLDR you put the song audio file and lyric text into the lrcgenerator.com website, it plays the song and you click once as each line begins, then you put the timed lyrics text it give you into a .txt file and that can be uploaded for the thread and sheet)

well sometimes ya gotta seize the day and do things yourself. I'm gonna upload some rentry links to the second-to-last column in the finished tab because no song's notes are going that far into the text. For tonight I'm just uploading the 2 Grips Of An Angel songs and then tomorrow start on more. The important thing is I'm getting the ball rolling so we're not all sitting around waiting for someone else.

I use https://www.lrcgenerator.com/ because it's literally just listening to the song and clicking once per line unless you wanna get fancier with my tips below.
If anyone else wants to do it, look at pic rel/the rentry uploads for an example of how the text should look when copy-pasted from the site . My tips from last year:

1. Add an extra [00:00.00] timing to the start of the text, it makes the start clean. Like pic rel.
2. Delete the website's advertising bit at the end, it breaks nothing to do so.
3. Personally I click as soon as I hear the line start to be sung. Like, I click as a reaction to the first syllable, ideally before the singer even gets to the 2nd one. There's wiggle room there because god knows nobody is expecting perfection, but if everyone does it this way it's simpler and the albums will be consistent.
4. As you're sitting there listening and clicking anyway, read the lyrics. If the singer changed something, it's helpful to fix that after you're done timing just by corrected it to what they actually said. For example using the Grips of an Angel song, 1 singer changed the lyrics on a couple lines and the other added a skit, so they can't share the same lyric text and they should be adjusted accordingly even if they're timed the same.
5. If you screw up the timing on a line and don't want to redo the whole song, just focus and do the rest right, then you can manually adjust the timing of that line in the text after. Musicbee lets you do this within the program while listening and you can instantly see how the new timing looks.

Grapple to the Ceiling - A cover of Scarface (Push it to the Limit) from the Scarface movie.
It's about movement based shooters, especially ones that allow a lot of vertical movement. I originally had Deep Rock Galactic in mind while writing it but I made it open ended enough to be about any game. And Grapple to the Ceiling isn't just used in the sense that you would use a grappling tool to go up, it's also an allegory on how mastery of movement options in a game like that is what gives a game a high skill ceiling.

And Duke, a cover of The Log Song from the Ren and Stimpy show. It's like a 30 second song so I'm sure someone can sing it.

You have to understand that melodyne isn't magic. It can fix notes that are up to a couple semitones off, but if you go too far it'll sound artificial. For fixing timing specifically it's just trial and error, it can take me minutes to fix a single sentence sometimes.
For harmonies you can try Izotope Vocal Synth, feed it both your original vocals and a midi track with the notes you want it to make. This also takes quite a while to learn. The way to get really good harmonies is to just sing them correctly. Also do two takes of the same harmony line so you can pan it left/right, that's how I make choruses sound big.

This is a collab between two anons and has been tuned note by note syllable by syllable phoneme by phoneme hand by hand. Why did we think this would be better done vocaloid-style? It's about an NPC who turns out to be a seagull and loses her voice and is relating the loss of her voice with how programmed her actions are, that she doesn't pick what to do or say or sing. The idea is that it parallels the character (in the canon game story) angsting because she's actually a seagull (not a real girl) and the NPC (in the meta sense) angsting because she's actually a fictional character (not a real girl). Because it's made using vocaloid-style software, we could pack it full of syllables that would be tough for a human to say, which is the point because the singer isn't human. The anon and I have been working on this since the musical started basically. It's okay if you guys prefer it to be in DLC. If a human singer wants to sing it that's okay too but I don't think it will be easy nor expected. It just took us this long to make it which is why we're dropping it a few days before the musical ends. Can't count how many hours anon and I have poured into this.
Anyway I would love critique so the other anon and I can improve it before the musical ends. I am gonna go to bed now because anon and I stayed up to finish this, but I'll read anything after.

I don't find it offensively bad or anything, and it's fine on an album I guess, but it probably would have helped your case a lot if this was made in the open. Having a finished vocaloid song dropped out of the blue from multiple people feels wrong. I'm glad it does have those few ties to past threads like other anons said, but this materializing as "yeah 2 of us made this completely outside the thread" makes it feel more like a discord butt buddies scenario than a /v/tm scenario.
It feels the same with art for me tbdesu, anything the thread gets to be privy to benefits greatly from that. The janny art from this week is good, but what makes me love it is getting to see the process in the thread where it went from a sketch to a prototype to a finished art piece with additional touches suggested by the thread. Writing a song that's got a completely different theme from the original forces creativity in altering the lyrics. Weird Al changing American Pie to a song about Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace means the song cannot simply be the same.
The original is about nostalgia, loss and longing for another time.
The parody is a synopsis of a movie that has nothing to do with the original song.
It takes work to rewrite a song, change it's lyrics entirely while telling a coherent story and keeping syllables and stresses. A good parody shouldn't just be the same story but with different characters and phrasing.

Nothing sticks out as lazy at all. It's changing essentially all the lyrics, including changing some lines that were originally repeats, while consistently working in direct references to the origin game. I think "girlgull" is a bit gibberish as a phrase but overall it lead to a really cute set of lyrics. I do wish it was sung by a human though, I get the logic of using a vocaloid but it just doesn't work for me personally on either side of things. If the creator's happy with it I don't really mind it though.

I don't mean this to shit on the other guy either, I do genuinely think it's a high effort set of lyrics in it's own merit.

The reason there was no pushback is because I agree with everyone's reply to me, I regretted it immediately posting it after actually reading what I sent. this close to the deadline I really stop dealing with lyrics though honestly, writefag's time to shine is september. by the time october begins I stop writing new parodies, and by the start of the last week I generally don't even look at other lyrics. the singfags either like something enough to pick it up out of the 200 existing options on the sheet, or they don't. in my experience the only way something gets serious feedback this late is if a singer is already interested and wants to clean it up before singing it.

(might and night) is absent.
There may be more, but I'm not going over it with a fine tooth comb. Try to look at the rhyming scheme a little more carefully so you don't miss unusual rhyme placements and slant rhymes.
Maybe highlight the words you need to match up in the same colour in a document while working on the song.
A song can lose a lot of character if you botch a rhyme.

I did pretty well myself. looking at a 50-70 percent run for the year depending on what gets finished (50 is a low ball assuming songs not completed right now don't get completed).
