web browsing has basically never had any issue on linux. firefox just works, and if the website has compatibility issues because it's firefox you can always use chromium.
the only thing that sucks is drm. netflix and amazon like to add drm that won't work on linux so you're stuck to 720p. i'm not sure why because that sure as shit doesn't stop all their slop from getting pirated.

The only thing you need is Steam and Proton GE.
You can run 99.9% of games on the market on Linux thanks to that.
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
The remaining 0.1% are games with spyware under the guise of kernel-level anti-cheats that can only run on Windows.

Since you're on /v/ the answer is Bazzite. Otherwise it would be Aurora or Bluefin, depending on what interface the end user is more into.

It's irrelevant. Linux distros generally perform the same.
There might be differences in terms of Arch distros sometimes being faster than Fedora distros, while both are faster than Debian/Ubuntu distros. And this is mainly because (in very oversimplified terms) newer software/driver/package versions come to Arch first, Fedora 6 months later and Ubuntu 2 years later.
>inb4 Ubuntu non-LTS and Debian unstable
These are non-standard and users are pushed into using the LTS releases. Even Mint is using Ubuntu LTS and being over a year behind in updates and game compatibility/performance because of that.
>>722922494
>Any way I can seamlessly try to check whetever what I use work on Linux (either with this tool or Wine)?
ProtonDB for games. Primarily look for Proton 9 and Proton 10 reports since those are the latest versions and they massively improve compatibility compared to older versions.
There isn't an equivalent for regular software. I mean, there is winehq but it's extremely unpopular and pretty much every report is outdated and wrong. Even a lot of games there are reported as "not working" or "not working well" despite working fine for the past decade (example from one of the previous threads is Warcraft 3 which works flawlessly in Wine and Proton).
If you want to test things out you can set up a Linux Live USB with persistence. This way you can have Linux installed on a USB drive and test things out there without wiping your Windows install.

If you're running games with /usr/bin/wine, maybe. Nobody does that in 2025 though. Every distribution gets the same Proton and the same Steam Linux Runtime from the Steam client, and other launchers similarly bring their own Wine.
Graphics driver packages being outdated is theoretically relevant to compatibility, but you still can't name a game that works on Arch and not on Mint.

WinBoat is just a virtual machine manager that creates a Windows virtual machine and makes it feel like your Windows software is running natively. I wouldn't recommend using it since it apparently exposes your whole user directory to the Windows VM, which means you can get affected by Windows malware. It's better to just set up a virtual machine yourself, which is as easy as installing an OS is.

I'm not sure about that. My friend moved away from Mint 21.3 because apparently a lot of games didn't work. Ever since he did he has not complained. And my other two friends which immediately started with Bazzite have no complaints at all despite that being the first non-Windows OS they've ever used.
Clearly by the end of the Ubuntu LTS release cycle the libraries are outdated enough for it to matter. I mean think of it this way. If there's a breakthrough in kernel level anti cheat compatibility right after Ubuntu 26 gets released, Linux Mint will be stuck without those games for 2 years while they'd be playable on Arch and Fedora.

>You can't even play games on it because there's no GPU passthrough.

I guess the logic was that a lot of people are claiming those are the only reason they're not moving away from Windows even if all games they play work in Wine/Proton.

You realize that most devs use Mac or Linux? The only devs using Windows are game devs and those working on ancient software with a ton of technical debt that was built for Windows servers/services and cannot be migrated away from it.

Proton is the platform to target, not Linux. And Proton is just an emulated Windows environment. So nobody cares if game devs don't make Linux games when Windows games works just fine on Linux.

Also how often do you need to reinstall your OS? Often because insignificant changes can break the shit out of it straight to kernel panic?

>Is equipped with an Internet browsing application program that is safe from online threats
then I'll stop using Windows.
Granted, I don't like the ENORMOUS bloat of Windows 10, and now 11 (and I have minimized it) which STALLS my processing power for NO REASON... at least it works.

Proton doesn't work well on NTFS. Setting up a proton/wine environment is unsupported and running games from an NTFS drive is sometimes unsupported as well. You'll have less of a headache if you store games on a btrfs or ext4 partition.

i've been trying to, but, ironically, the only thing that works for with me is games.
Everything else just does not fucking work or is understandable in how to make it work 3 distros later, especially Fusion and Rhino, both of which i explicitly need for work.
Maybe this winboat thing will work, but it still leaves the problem that Linux is inherently complicated and free (Read: Fragmented) when you want to do more than browse net on it, which makes it a fucking hassle to find anything for anyone who isnt a 24/7 no life tech nerd.
And yes i have tried retard-proof distros like mint and bazzite and Arch with its wiki. Same issue - i can use it for basic shit and gaming, but it cant use the software i need no matter what.

So why CAN'T Linuxfags simply make Linux work for gaming?
It's not like Windows is running on black magic or, since it's so jeeted, ayurvedic copromancy.
It's fucking code. How the fuck do you not just make code that recognizes code?
>We made an entire human body but it's not compatible with a spinal cord, but it's still a good body
No it's not. It's fucking useless. Could you at least make a fucking wheelchair for it so it can get around instead of sitting there like a limp pile of shit?
Linux is a fucking cripple and they refuse to code a wheelchair for it.
And since there are so many different splits of Linux that just means there's a fucking cavalcade of cripples and people desperately trying to convince me that Windows' ability to walk isn't important.
REAL OPERATING SYSTEMS DRAG THEMSELVES ACROSS THE GROUND

Mint gets recommended because it has been the generic "starter" distrobution for years but it doesn't actually do anything special.
Realistically, there are three main flavors of modern Linux.
First is Debian, which is similar to Windows in that it has occasional major updates and small patches between. Mint is just Debian but repackaged by someone besides Red Hat. Most of the semi well known distros are just Debian with one thing changed and a new website because some retard wanted to have their own version to get some nerd cred. If you want Linux how some retard in Africa or the poor parts of Europe think is it should be, this is for you.
Second is Fedora, which is the free version of Red Hat Linux. RHL is what Microsoft wishes old Windows NT was. Red Hat uses Fedora as their test platform for their paid software, which means they have a vested interest in making it stable and usable for their paid customers. Similar to the Debian derivatives, this will have major releases and patches between. Unlike the Debian derivatives, the people publishing this are professionals. If you want Linux you don't need to fuck with and made by an actual software company, this is for you.
The third is Arch. Arch has a reputation for being difficult because retards think complex = better. Arch has no major updates, and each part of your system updates seperately. Also, each part of your system is as standalone as possible. The hardest part of Arch is installing, and that is just because the people the make Arch refuse to make an installer. So other people have made their own Arch installers, that are basically just Arch minus the annoying part, such as EndeavourOS. If you were the type of person that tinkered with your computer before Microsoft did their best to make that impossible, one of these might be best for you.

I don't understand what you're complaining about. You're trying to use software which doesn't support Linux at all. Either find an alternative, or get the developers to make a Linux build, or just have a separate work computer like most people do.
If you're the one choosing the tools then you're the one who needs to change. If it's your employer who is choosing the tools for you then you should've been provided with a laptop.

So the answer is Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, CachyOS, Bazzite. These are your easy distros. Some are easier than others, but all of them match the criteria.
There isn't anything special about specific distros when it comes to "organizing files" or "web browsing".

If you just organize your files into folders then any version of linux will do the trick. I think the big NAS products and media servers are also all linux based. Did you try it and had anything that didn't work?
If you just need an offline storage you could even use an old windows version as long as you don't connect it to the internet.

Ubuntu LTS ships nautilus with quite obvious and really annoying bugs that are not fixed for years (because you need to wait for another LTS)
Ntfs3 kernel module sucks and I have no idea why it is even enabled for external drives
Also my bluetooth mouse kept behaving weird / laggy and the only way to fix it was to disable usb power saving for some reason. Have no idea why all of those weird things are enabled by default if they clearly cause issues and are not stable

Well, to be fair, he did include "view" in his description. So I have to assume he wants to look at his image files and watch his movies files, and not just their filenames.
Early Windows used to be exactly that; a library. You could organize your files it had programs that let you look at them. In fact, some programs even let you watch them at 2x or even 4x speed! Later, you could even attach speaker systems to your computers and you'd be able to listen to your music files. That was awesome.

That's a complete lie. When last I tried Linux I specifically installed a game that had a native Linux version (Pathfinder: Kingmaker). I did it specifically because I know the game back and front. Within 10 minutes I spotted two visual glitches and one bug I never had on Windows.

If you want an OS that is made by a competent software company and just works you get Fedora. If you want a system that you can tinker with and has good documentation, you get Arch.

Devuan is just another meme copy of Debian.
Zorin is a meme copy of a meme copy (Ubuntu) of Debian.
Seriously guys, just skim the Wikipedia articles. The first paragraph of the Devuan page shows how retarded the meme copies are.
>With the release of Debian 8, some developers and users felt alienated due to the project's adoption of systemd and subsequent removal of support for other existing init systems.[7] This decision prompted some Debian community members to start a fork of Debian without systemd.[8]
Devuan started as literally just Debian but published by someone that was butthurt about the bootloader changing for a new edition of Debian. All of the meme distros are like that.

The issue is using it not installing it. It is like a full time job to constantly be working around all of its problems and looking shit up.
I get it for what it is: a hobby. But its not an OS a normal person can use for an extended period of time. You should be able to forget the OS is there, and maybe you could if all you did was browse the internet, but for the majority of people who use their PCs for a lot of stuff it just isn't good enough. It is a gatekept hobby. Nothing more.

The ironic part is, those choices used to be common on Windows as well but Microsoft and Google have most people so well trained now that they use nothing but whatever can preinstalled on their PC or phone and never even question if there are better options.
No one used to use Media Player for MP3s, they would download and install something like Winamp. Now, putting that much effort in is absolutely frightening to people, judging by this thread.

The barrier mostly comes from the fact that you have learn a bunch of things to make the switch with there being practically no incentive to learn any of that for most people. At the point where you've installed Linux it'd be faster to reinstall Windows than to learn all the ins and outs of trying to make the shit that works out of the box on Windows also work on Linux.

Having lootboxes has nothing to do with it. The combat and story are average at best, the idiotic time gating locks out huge portions of the buildcrafting for days to weeks, and the portions we do have look almost strictly linear. As it is, it doesn't seem like it offers much that existing MMOs don't already, but again the time gating makes it look like it has even less than it actually does.

The worst part is, if you install a version of Linux that uses KDE as the interface, it is 99% the same as Windows and the few parts that are not are easily understandable if you can read at a third grade level.
I don't even have a Linux system right now, but I have in the past. The first time I tried to install Linux, I had the computer working in a few hours and had no problems using it on a daily basis. There was no real learning curve at all.
The problem is, I'm not the average user. I'm 42 and grew up having to constantly fuck with Windows to get games to work. Any modern Linux variant is so much better than Windows was in the 90s and 00s, but modern retards have become so accustomed to computers and phones not letting them break anything that the moment the computer does not react exactly how they expect it to, they freak the fuck out and can't handle it.
That is who is in this thread crying about how Linux doesn't work; retards that grew up on iPads. They don't actually know how to use a computer, they just know how to click the shiny button and make sparkles appear on the screen.

Some kernel level anticheats work in a VM but not in proton and vice versa. HDR works better in Windows. Online functionality for games with anticheat is generally less of a gamble with a windows VM than proton. Modding is astronomically easier (and in some cases only possible on) windows. Using non-steam launchers is much easier on windows. Vulkan is not a 1:1 substitute for all dx games. I use both a vm and proton and each has its uses. In general, I default to my VM because it's less troubleshooting (******for individual games*****) on average.

You are right that modding is much easier on windows, theres no mistake about that, but thats because most of the modding tools and applications are windows applications. It has nothing to do with linux as an operating system.

Realistically, for most people there is no benefit between different OSs. If you are capable of asking that question and actually understanding what tweaks you did and why, you would find Linux easy.
So then it becomes a choice of do you continue to fight with Microsoft over control of your computer, or do you just bite the bullet and learn something new? Both options take effort on your part but it is up to you to decide which is better.

Fedora is an actual complete OS. If you are not trying to do something that requires custom tweaking like GPU switching on a gaming laptop it should "just work" as much as Windows, you just have to learn the differences.

Most of the time it has to do with the file structure for proton games compared to windows game. There's no drag and drop for mod files in proton. Again, it's all well and good some big titles have work arounds but there will never be 1:1 functionality. Perfect example, I want to play Homeworld Remastered Collection on proton. I own the game on GOG because it was cheaper, more stable than the steam version, and most of the best mods are not on steam workshop. I cannot apply the final patch of that game. I cannot play that game without CTD between each mission. Neither of these issues will likely ever be resolved in a wine environment method of playing these games on linux and there are thousands of games like this that don't have the playerbase size and functionality concern that Cyberpunk 2077. Just use proton is not and will not be a ubiquitous answer for all windows games.
