What would Tolkien think about Hyrule and The Legend of Zelda series?
Anonymous No.722920534 [Report]
A loathsome offensive hodge-podge of disconnected and incoherent nonsense
Anonymous No.722920539 [Report] >>722920762
some boomer nonsense, I'm sure

Tolkien basically hated everything I think and he wasn't wrong to
Actually I think he was relatively favorable towards Robert E Howard's Conan stories

>Tolkien basically hated everything
Not really, rather a lot of publicity is given to his dislikes and no one really talks about the stuff he did like. E.g. nobody can shut up about how he didn't like Dune, but he did like Asimov

If Tolkien was a teenager he would have unironically been a Zelda loretuber.

I think the more important question is what would he think of corpos like Palantir referencing his work

He didn't even like TV so I doubt he'd care at all about vidya.

I know a legitimate PHD holder who is a university professor that studies tolkien...Ill try to ask him next time I see him.
As for my assumption, he would hate the medium, I think he'd give it some points for the ludo, but would probably say its outweighed by its overwhelmingly frequent use as brainless timewasting. If you were to hand him the historia books or something and mention nothing of the games (or have him separate the two) he would most likely think botw/totk were better than the rest of the series because they are poetic tales (a favourite of tolkien's) versus the more straightforward stories of ocarina or twilight princess. As >>722920950 implied, people like the "story" because of the world building, which isnt even very strong from any single entry, relying instead on accumulated lore.

I would also say that totk's theme of "you cant do this alone" would be more appealing to him than the typical "you are the only one who can do anything" fantasy.

He would despise it, Tolkien is not the perpetual hater retards >>722920628 claim he is for clicks on youtube, but was very critical about corporations, and since palatir are egregious violators of Catholic morality, he would have obviously found them repulsive on every moral and ethical front.

He read 1 (one) Conan short story that he was given alongside a host of other fantasy short stories and listed it as one of the ones that at least weren't complete dogshit, that's all

Why is every piece of BotW concept art 10x more colorful than the actual game.

Zelda threw away its Christian roots since OoT rather than embracing them, he'd probably dislike this considering his faith was the biggest thing that contributed to his writing

In Skyward Sword, you industrialize the land of Hyrule by restoring old technology and reestablishing temples throughout the land. The Goddess statue even crash lands right on top of Demise's seal. The whole game is about terraforming Earth from Skyloft's point of view.

In Twilight Princess, you do the same. You restore Hyrule to its former glory by using magic from both Hyrule and Twili to correct the wrongs Ganon influenced.

Same thing in Breath of the Wild, where the Guardians are ancient technology used for terraforming and manipulating landmarks, resources, and cultures which are in turn, subverted by Ganon.

A lot of the games are about using industrialization for the common good, and not letting it fall into greater evil hands like Ganon's.

Tolkien still recognized good qualities even in things he disliked. For example, he appreciated E.R. Eddison's 1922 book The Worm Ouroboros for it's prose, literary merits and the way it was innovative kind of epic fantasy for it's time. He however deeply disliked the "might makes a right" morality of story's heroes and it's portrayal of war which Tolkien saw as glorifying. Eddison also appreciated Tolkien and was occasional member of Inklings with him, but also thought that Tolkien's views and outlook are "soft" because his fantasy characters are not Nietzschean supermen.

Because they were ugly, and you only like it because you saw it as a kid. Windwaker was better, TP was better, even BotW and how washed out it was had a unique look that was far better than "anime for embarrassed 12 year old westoids" that those 2 games used.

Tolkein created highly detailed cosmologies, histories, and languages for his setting. He would find 99.9% of modern fantasy utterly amateurish and without literary merit.
