Game devs in this era would double dip by selling strategy guides and include impossible secrets like this. An early form of dlc of sorts except not gay. Those strategy guides were high quality stuff. Detailed mechanics explanations, artwork, lore and character info, secrets like this.

Except this was not a secret, you literally need to know and do that in order to beat the game.

Was there hints in the manual? Many games had crucial info in the manual.
Actually wasn't this an in game hints botched by bad translations situation?
Either way

one of the npcs says it an broken nonsense way like "hit head against cliff to find treasure" or some shit like that but some of them lie to you anyway

I did this without any context as a kid. I didn't even own the game, I was borrowing it from a friend. I'm sure that now, as an adult, I'd never know to do this though.

Call the hotline or buy a strategy guide.

In the past video games were meant to keep you busy for several months, and they weren't 120 gigabyte RPGS full of cinematics, they were 100kb NES games. As a result, most kids in the 80's/90's didn't even beat half the games in their collections because they were filled with shit like this. You would just replay the same parts over and over. It was seen as completely normal to have the game gated by strategy guides or a call to the Nintendo hotline. Yes you could call a landline phone number and they would tell you what to do.

This sort of completely nonsensical shit was pretty common back then actually, this only gets so much attention because CV survived longer than those other games
And no it wasn't tip line bait, games were just made by pure autists back then

Kids didn't have many games back then so played same ones for long times, so I don't doubt that. Mess around long enough and might stumble to the right answer

I mean, I didn't mess with the game a ton. I did most of it in an afternoon, if I recall. I was actually surprised when I beat the game, because obviously the final boss was such a fucking pushover. I do think kids are more willing to play around and search for stuff though. I've replayed a few games from my childhood and I noticed that missed some stuff that I found as a kid, and that's just because I was more interested in searching every little bit of a game rather than doing the immediate, obvious objectives.

it's sad when an entire thread just regurgitates what it heard instead of playing the 40 year old game they feel inclined to spread misinformation in.

Mostly a fault of shit localization, which ran real rampant back in the day. Probably deliberately given the "call the hotline/buy a guide/subscribe to Nintendo Power and pray this issue covers your game" strategy.

Maybe you got lucky or had good intuition. Who knows.
Just kinda reminded me of people "memeing" about games like zelda 1 being unbeatable without guide. Play long enough and you'll just end up trying everything everywhere

Step 1: Learn moon runes.
Step 2: Play the moon rune version.
Step 3: Talk to NPCs.
Step 4: Find out if they are telling the truth through trial and error.
