I kinda lost most of my interest in this game when it got popular since I think a lot has changed for the worse, in between the old areas getting "remade" and the combat focusing more on just spamming your active skills and less brawling with melee weapons.

Again, you're oddly fixated on trying to spin a positive change. Basic attacks were broke as fuck in earlier builds. As a mage you just spammed charged attacks. As a melee you just spammed jump attacks. The core kits were too powerful. Either way there's nothing stopping you from going purist and just investing in passives/buffs/whatever if you don't like the active skills.

There is no "base color", you select your starting dye during character creation and can then change it. For examply, if you picked red during character creation and then dyed blue, you could revert back to red with red dye.

You will have to use illusion stones to equip items in the vanity slots. It's a bit annoying but luckily, Vanity stones are cheap. Last time I played, there was a vanity button on the top right of the equipment inventory to do this. This way you can wear vanity gear without gimping yourself.
