i find it belieavable
Notice how almost all the other indieshit metroidvanias are ripping off dark souls mechanics for their combat. Estus clones, parries/deflects, spammable i-frame dashes, shit like that. HK on the other hand has its entirely own combat, the closest resemblance to these shitty trends plaguing contemporany games is the fact you get an invulnerable dash... At the last 20% of the game, and with a cooldown large enough that you can dash 2 times normally in between

everything else is a reach
>benches
9999 games have respawning enemies on checkpoints since forever
>corpse run
billions of games have that. Almost everyone that admitted to copying souls just made it a generic corpse run, but HK added the shade mechanic which actually matches the metroid-like genre by letting you reach places you otherwise couldnt
>plot
you could maybe draw a line from The Hollow Knight & the 'bad' ending to linking the fire and replacing Lord Gwyn. But thats like, 20% of the main plot and it depends on completely ignoring the reason why the HK is sealed there in the first place

I have never heard anyone say that Hollow Knight was revolutionary to the metroidvania genre. Not even its biggest fanboys. They'll say it's the best metroidvania ever, but that isn't the same as "revolutionary" to the genre, implying genre innovation.
If I did hear that, I'd assume the person was trolling.
The most that I would grant is that people have probably called it revolutionary without the qualifier of "for the metroidvania genre", but depending on context this is not necessarily claiming that it's innovative to the genre. They could be talking about its success and level of polish as a small indie game.

>Why is this such a common phenomenon in vidya?
I'd ask about a different phenomenon: that of people presenting dumb, obviously wrong opinions as commonplace just to have an easy dunk.

even if you exclusively pinned it down to whatever was inspired by minecraft you result in lots of games

they didnt 'add a spin to the mechanics' they outright did not feature any defining core gameplay mechanic from souls games in the first place. it couldnt be remotely further from a 'soulslike' technically speaking it just so happens to be the one of the few games that shares some qualities with the map of DS1

Because modern games have a standard of what's actually good and old childhood games aren't actually that great when you replay them
I loved ape escape on PS1 but playing it again I now notice half the game is back tracking to pad out the game, it runs at like 15 fps all the time and there's a million fucking bugs and glitches
so yes you can have a modern "favorite" but ranking them in the first place is retarded

souls corpse runs are pretty specific, previously corpse runs would leave you weaker since your gear dropped (or in the case of Wizardry you'd have to bring a different chara entirely) while souls style "wallet fetch" doesn't specifically weaken you outside of other punitive game mechanics, none of which are worse than being naked

There was very little crossover into other genres before souls.
Souls is mostly 3 mechanics,
Loss of exp and currency on death that you can regain
Respawning enemies / bonfires
rpg stats / progression
Hollow knight has 2 of those.
Losing all currency upon death which can then be reclaimed is specifically a souls mechanic. What other games have this mechanic specifically?

it's not a revolutionary metroidvania, it's just an exceptionally well crafted one. it IS revolutionary to the metroidvania genre for being the one that broke into mainstream modern audiences. no other metroidvania since actual metroid and castlevania was good enough on its own merits to do that, and even now HK is better than those series modern entries.

yeah its kind of crazy they said they took inspiration from souls games and bloodborne specifically and then after the game was successful got really upset about it and backtracked on it saying they never even played them.
like idk if its worse if they were lying the first time or the second, did they never play the games and were just copying other games copying souls games and they lied about it to try make the game more appealing? or did they lie when they claimed none of them had played any of them (which seems far more likely to be a lie) and wanted to seem like they had come with something on their own.

yeah they straight up in some of the first dev interview talk things they did right around the games release directly talk about playing bloodborne and how playing it made them change some of the mechanics during the development of the game and imply dark souls was an inspiration for other aspects but don't directly say that. the way they talk about dark souls implies they played it and having played bloodborne it isn't a stretch to assume they played other games in the series and directly or indirectly were also inspired by them.
bloodborne is a souls game anyway so it inspiring it is being inspired by souls, there is no getting around the bloodborne inspiration, its directly and clearly stated.

but now they say that none of them have even played any of the souls games.
which is just an outright lie.

I think they backpedaled on it because souls games kept getting more popular and they didn't want to be seen as just copying popular game or something, who knows.

ask them about devil may cry, which can, by definition, be called a jrpg, they will instead instist on calling it a "spectacle fighter" or "character action game"

This is the only thing youre slightly right about except that has nothing to do with obeying anybody. I could contest that statement being that the type of game that is commonly described as a JRPG may not have been invented in Japan but was popularized and iterated upon by Japanese devs to the point that the style is synonymous with the country regardless of it's actual origin.
But you could go back and forth on that for hours so I'll just ask this: what the point is of having a genre that is simply described as "thing from country" as opposed to being an actual descriptor for a type of game?
Like it or not JRPG has endured as a name for a genre and using the term as anything else is just pointless.
