Depends. What are you playing the game for?

>combat

The first few hours will feel a bit slow until you at least get the dash/sprint ability, but the combat is fast paced and challenging. The boss fights are obviously the highlight, of which there are many. You might not like some of the runbacks though if you die to them.

>exploration

The map is fucking massive. Almost a bit too massive. There's plenty of backtracking since it's a Metroidvania, but the fast travel points help mitigate it. Still, once you get deep into the end game, it can feel like a little bit of a chore traversing the map if you're going for 100%. However, the environments are brilliant and beautiful.

>storytelling

Play Hollow Knight first. Seriously, it's very important to the plot and you probably won't enjoy Silksong as much if you don't. People tend to think that the way HK tells its story is better, but I think it's a matter of opinion.

>platforming

There's plenty of platforming gauntlets that WILL frustrate you until you get a grasp on the controls and all of the abilities, but it's some of the most fun platforming I've played in a game in quite a long time. I wish it had a Path of Pain style gauntlet though. Hopefully in the DLC.

Seriously though, pirate Hollow Knight first. Playing Silksong first would be such a detriment I think. Especially since the gameplay in Hollow Knight is kinda hard to go back to after 100 hours in Silksong.

I dunno man, I kinda didn't like going back through the map near the end to pick up every collectible and upgrade. Act 3 wasn't as bad as everyone tries to claim it is, but that's only because I didn't go for 100% on my first true ending. I actually thought Act 3 was great because I went straight for the hearts to finish up the final boss, only doing a few quests here and there on my way. It was only after I decided to clean up everything that the game started to drag for me.

You know how the first boss you usually fight in HK is the Gruz Mother? You remember how free that boss is?

In comparison, I'd say the first boss you fight in Silksong has the equivalent difficulty of Hornet 1, or maybe False Knight. Either way, the difficulty only ramps up from there. I personally believe there are two, maybe three bosses in Silksong that exceed the difficulty of the Radience by quite a large margin.

HK's combat is really simple which is the reason why the game is easy 90% of the time and then immediately transitions to extremely difficult whenever they tone something up too much because you're fairly limited in what you can do.
Silksong's combat, while formed on the same base, is significantly tighter and the basic mobility options give you so much more control over your character that they could make the general gameplay punishing without making it feel like shit. The only people saying it's ball bustingly difficult are the ones still trying to play it like HK and not making use of their mobility, imo it's one of the most perfectly satisfying games I've played in terms of difficulty.
Also imo, my only advice is that I find a lot of people have the above opinion because they laser in on Reaper crest when they get it because it seems like it'd be good on HK principles, but in Silksong gameplay it's probably the weakest crest

This post makes me so fucking happy that I never touched the Reaper crest after getting it. I benched the second I could and swapped right back to Hunter. First, I figured learning the diagonal pogo would be a benefit (I was right). Second, I could literally feel how absolutely SHIT Reaper was just by how fucking slow it is to attack. And the passive Silk buff on bind did not feel worth it at all. Maybe if each silk ball gave you an entire bar of silk it would MAYBE be worth it.

I also quite enjoyed a (now old) game by the name of Valdis Story. It's full of deviantart teen edge, but it's still a nice combat-oriented metroidvania to play. It ranks your boss clears (you can retry before leaving the boss room), and it features retarded Souls-like quests which require you to backtrack to some random place/NPC at a random point in the story or get fucked on this playthrough. Do people seriously take a day or more to beat bosses in these games? I'm not even trying to be a dick but the biggest walls for me took like 2 hours and there were maybe 2 of those. I stupidly ignored tools for the majority of the game which according to some should have made it impossible but I never felt the need to use them. I barely touched my silk skills either, just saved silk to heal if it was ever necessary.

Is the game really that hard? Do most people just suck? Am I better than I think I am? I see people saying they took like 3 days on a boss and my knee jerk thought is "you're exaggerating"

Yeah, some people really get stuck on certain bosses for "days". Not full days, of course, they probably play for a couple of hours and then shut the game off. Also, these are far from being majority of the players either. They're outlying data points. If you look at the broader statistics, the average player might have struggled somewhat, but still cleared the game just fine. HK/SS are not some hardcore shmup shit, or troll games that are full of intentional deathtraps like Boshi and shit.

What really kills it for me is that the silk buff is ONLY on bind. I would have liked to be able to enter the silk gen mode through some other means, like Wanderer's crit condition or Hunter's focus condition, so reaper be used more offensively with a focus on spending silk on shit other than healing. At least Witch's healing gimmick does the same amount of damage as the silk spent (provided you use mirrors).
Maybe dumping all silk into attacks and popping a reserve bind might actually be an offensive way to use reaper now that I think about it

Witch down attack isn't actually 2 hits of damage so unless you like the teleport itself it's not better than the others. On the other hand, Witch dash attack IS 3 whole hits of full damage so you should be slapping that on whatever fucked up multicrest you design.
Also, no I didn't use charge attacks, but Did You Know Gaming the Witch charge attack can be mashed to extend it like Thread Storm and if you do that it's actually worth the charging investment, albeit you need a larger opening. And on the witch bind attack, injector band is basically a must on witch since the normal time is a smidge too long to consistently use it. Her ground combos (3 hit and spin) are just as easy to dodge and punish as in the first few phases so just watch out for her doing the grounded projectile tosses and dash. You lose out on your punish window on the spinball though since she fucks off instantly in phase 3, but she does her double aerial projectile more which is more punishable with spinball was in the first place. Dash you get 1, maybe 2 pogos on depending if the crest you use can hit her without clanking with her spin after the dash.

In-universe I don't think they ever intended for a random pilgrim to show up and ascend to the cradle. It's just there to tell pilgrims "you can only come in if the three masters say you can" with musical dressing. The reason why access to the cradle is locked to having approval from all three is because the Weavers intended for someone to show up strong enough to kick mommy's ass and free everyone, so they left the Citadel in the hands of the threefold rulers to make sure of that. Presumably the Cogwork Dancers flanked by all the Choral Reeds are also there to guarantee only the strong could make it to the central room in the first place.

The Threefold Melody was created to put extra locks on Granny Silk, it's not for pilgrims.

Originally, the pilgrimage was a holy exercise for bugs to reach the Citadel. Before it became all high-tech, the Citadel was a stone city, but then Grand Mother Silk came along and did what Pale King did, except while also trying to mindcontrol everyone. She then gets sealed in her cocoon, and to prevent anyone from breaking her out, a 24/7 Chorus was created to keep her in a trance-like sleep and The Cradle was sealed. You need to blessing of the Architects, Conductors, and Vaultkeepers to access the Cradle, which is why you need to find all 3 so you can go slap Grand Mother Silk's fat ass around.

By the way, that's the major piece of evidence backing up the "Conductors were the ones kidnapping weavers" claim, since all of the cages the weavers were brought in were in The Cradle with the only Conductor left alive to produce their part of the Threefold Melody being Conductor Ballador in High Halls.

Only one Weaver was imprisoned in The Slab, IIRC, and it was First Sinner. From what I can piece together, First Sinner started the Rebellion but failed and got locked up. The rest of the Weavers, went into hiding in the Weavenests and Mount Fay in order to continue the Rebellion. Then the snails and Bilewater rebels joined the fight and they managed to lock GMS up.

Either they didn't really care about Sinner being locked up or they didn't have time after the Rebellion had concluded and just ditched. From the lore hidden in the Weavenests, it sounds like they knew the binding wasn't going to last forever and they fled to other lands (which is how some ended up in Hallownest, for example). Then the Conductors took over and kept the Choir going to keep GMS enervated while the few loyal Weavers (perhaps just Widow) stayed behind to help bust Granny out of jail.

My theory, and it's a good one backed up by loads of evidence, is that the pilgrimage was encouraged to get more meat to run the Underworks. Someone needed to keep the power on and do all the menial chores around The Citadel since all the full citizens were busy engaging in The Chorus to keep Granny Silk asleep. So the pilgrims who made it through Blasted Steps or Sinners' Road were immediately conscripted into serfdom in The Underworks to keep things functioning. The Architects were trying to automate everything, but they didn't quite get that far and needed manual labor in the power plant

Explicitly using "Our".

>I did not wane!

>Sustained by fury!
>Cursed by Silk!
>Cursed with Silk!
>Cursed to know...
>The sin... the truth...

This implies that she was part of the rebellion with OTHER Weavers. The Weavers who overthrew Grandma Silk. The only Weaver we know of who sided with Silk is Widow, and she was punished heavily for it. Why would the Weavers, then, punish First Sinner?

Unless Sinner was just a huge asshole like Socrates and was given the Weaver version of hemlock.

The Weaver Rebellion seems to be the shortest lived, because:
a) The Weavers left notes in the Weavenests saying to GTFO Pharloom before Silk wakes up and drawing maps on where to skedaddle

None of that would make sense if she was abducted from somewhere else. Additionally, we see other Weavers in the Red Memory and, accounting for the size difference between baby Hornet and adult Hornet, Widow is both roughly the right size to be a full Weaver and about what you might expect for one whose mask was forcibly removed. Her and First Sinner are roughly the same size, and share a couple attacks.

Whiteward existed as a way to use silk to extend lifespans. Greymoor exists as a way to recycle the used silk to bring back to the Citadel since, in the absence of Granny Silk, they can't produce any more silk.

That would also explain the kidnappings. They send for the Weavers/children of Weavers in other lands, bring them forcefully to Pharloom, and then milk them of their silk.

>Wouldn't he be a victim of the haunting too? To live that long he'd have to be filled with silk but to be filled with silk puts him under GMS' influence
It appears that particularly powerful beings can ingest Silk's silk without coming under her mind control, kind of like how particularly powerful beings in Hallownest could become infected while resisting the infection and Radiance's mind-erasure. Those who are given over to the Haunting cannot speak and only attack the non-Haunted. All of the NPCs you speak to in the game are free from the Haunting until they aren't, like the merchant in Bone Bottom who you can find in The Marrow later in the game. Earlier she speaks with you and sells you shit. Later she just attacks you and is unable to speak.

How does this explain Lace being jealous of Hornet (her entire motive throughout the game, she took GMS trying to capture Hornet as a sign that she was being replaced, every action lace does in the game is based on the motive of preventing hornet from reaching gms as a result, it's why she frees her from her cage, tries to kill her when she decides to delve deeper into pharloom and then saves hornet before the start of act 3 so she doesn't go down into the void with her mother), the fact that Hornet says the ones who kidnapped her seemed possessed by a singular will (the haunting) and that the silk heart dialogue (from GMS perspective) has lines like
>...Child... Weaver...
>...Child... Spider...
>...Arrived... At last...
>...Rise... Rise...

I think you've misread something. Lace isn't jealous, and she's not trying to stop Hornet, especially not in Deep Docks. We know from her other fights that she's capable of a lot more than what she showed in Deep Docks, and she shows up in multiple other places just to taunt Hornet but never attacks her.

Keep in mind that Lace also never attacked the bugs of the Citadel despite being more than capable of destroying it herself. She could've killed Ballador and totally prevented Hornet from reaching The Cradle. She could've destroyed the Psalm Cylinder in the Whispering Vaults or destroyed the Architect core in Cogwork Core too. But instead, she frees Hornet and leads her to The Citadel and eventually The Cradle.

Lace and Phantom didn't like their mother. At all. That's why Phantom wanted to die and Lace did nothing to stop the Rebellion, assist Widow, or thwart your attempt to seal GMS. Hell, she also attacks Silk to start of Act 3.

She's absolutely not jealous. If she were, she wouldn't have saved Hornet from Silk when Silk was trying to take Hornet with her. Lace deliberately sacrifices herself and then tells Hornet (via her Force Projection) that she was glad she rebelled against her mother. And I quote:

>Letting you live was my rebellion, spider. I've denied my mother your silken strength. I've won.
>She can thrash, and waste, and know her pathetic, broken child caused the mortal wound.
>Rejoice! And let it all come down.

She knew her mother wanted Hornet, but she wasn't jealous. Lace hated Silk. She cut off Silk's arm in order to free Hornet and get her revenge on her mother. She didn't care if she died in the process since she also wanted to die like her sister.

She has an inferiority complex. Lace thinks Silk only wants Hornet so that she could take Hornet as her protege and leave her artificial daughter behind. And everything matches with her having mommy issues, not being jealous. She's angry about her and Phantom existing as weird silk beings. She tells Hornet as much, saying it's not a real life, to which Hornet tells her she's alive.

Lace doesn't want her mother's approval. If she did she would free her mother. She has access to the Cradle. Silk is already weakening her bonds. Hornet just has to provoke Silk to get her to break out. Lace could've easily done the same or MORE to break Silk out. And yet, Lace doesn't even attack the Citadel to stop the Chorus. The very thing keeping Silk asleep. She doesn't try to kill Hornet in Deep Docks when Hornet was at her weakest, instead letting Hornet grow stronger in order to whine at her in the Citadel and the Cradle.

She's desperate for her mothers affection and attention, her resentment of her mother is born from that neglect, and she explicitly bemoans the attention that's given towards Hornet, that's the jealousy. When she saves hornet and falls into the void with Silk that's the ultimate expression of those emotions, she doesn't want Silk to get her way and she doesn't want Silk and Hornet to be united even in death.

Lace has Needolin dialogue in Deep Docks, too, which is:
>Bring chaos...
>Bring ruin...
>Welcome, Spider. Welcome!
>Feel pain, so pure!
>Feel freedom false!
>Let fate's bindings choke you away!

She can meet Hornet several times throughout the story, and she could've killed Hornet during any of those times by going all out. But instead, it sounds very much like Lace deliberately freed Hornet in order to muck up Silk's plan of freeing herself, the "chaos" and "ruin" she mentions above.

Then there's her Needolin dialogue in the Exhaust Organ where she's exceedingly upset about her and Phantom's existence, which is further corroborated by what Lace says in The Cradle. Lace hates what Silk did to create her in Phantom, she doesn't consider it a life, and she's lashing out against her mother to do so. That's very evident by all of the clues the game gives.

Other dialogue from 12th shows that:

>Second Sentinel was created by later Architects as well
>The First Sentinel actually kidnapped bugs to bring to the Citadel
>The knowledge of creating a new Sentinel has been lost.

Quoting 12th here:

>Long before the c-c-creation of the core, the sentinels ventured, even beyond these walls, to see all bugs brought-forced safe to serve the Citadel.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Silksong. The writing is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of closeted lesbianism most of the dynamics will go over a typical player's head. There's also Lace's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation - her personal philosophy draws heavily from the Underworks Dirge hymns, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of Lace's writing, to realise that she doesn't just have a fat ass - she actually says something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Lacenet truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the tragedy in Lace's existential giggle, which itself is a cryptic reference to Grand Mother Silk's ironic downfall. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of the addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Lace's genius wit unfolds itself on their monitors.

I literally do not care a single bit about the fact that you get rewards from the grubs. My complaints are purely from a story and aesthetics perspective. The fleas give some positive hope in a very dreary game. I didn't really care about the grub's plight in Hollow Knight.

Grubs > Fleas is an objective, in lore fact. Grubs are so precious that there exists a super powerful being whose only goal is to collect and examine the Grubs. He owns an entire tower in the capital city of the kingdom where he ogles and tickles and does unspeakable things to Grubs. Because they're that precious.

There is no one who cares about the Fleas even 1/10th as much as the Collector cares about Grubs.

Seems more like silksong dlc territory. The hornet mode was expanded into a new game because hallownest as a map and its enemies/bosses weren't fit for the agile moveset they had for hornet. On the other hand lace is about the same size as hornet as well as the same level of agility, they don't really need a whole game for her, but could easily do some sort of alternate game mode.

It doesn't do much interesting, it's boring, the only boss it has can't even be fought until much later in the game and offers only 1/5th of an actual reward, and the only other things of note are the Barbed Bracelet (useless for non-speedrunners), Styx (useless for anyone not shit at the game), and the Tacks, which are actually cool.

Would not a two-phase battle against The Knight and later the Lord of Shades form not be the best possible final, final boss to the game?
I mean come on, they're the God of Gods, right? Plus you got to beat Hornet's ass in the first game as The Knight, so it's just fair if Hornet gets to repay the favor.

Considering the Haunting was still going on while GMS was being voided, and it was made worse because the abyss could use her threads, I can see a new ending where kicking the void's ass and making it cough up GMS and Lace results in a slightly better ending where all traces of the Haunting are permanently severed and GMS agrees to go into seclusion with Lace so Pharloom can properly rebuild free of them. But that would require a lot of contrivances to force it to work out.
