I’m not gonna enjoy an aw game where all the cos have the same stats sorry.
There is a reason why DoR pvp is less popular and practically nonexistent compared to the first 3 games, especially AW2 which arguably strikes the best middle ground between balance and different stats on cos.
I also think tag battles are fun no matter how unbalanced they are and AW1 is an excellent single player game, though all AW games are in a sense.
DoR doesn’t even have a war room and the replacement for it wasn’t as fun.

I have tried multiple times to get into FE and I just don't understand what they are going for. It can't decide if it wants to be a roguelike type game where you try and power through your losses, or a Disgaea game where you are min/maxing custom units. The newer games all seem to expect you to reset when a unit dies as part of the design. On higher difficulties a random enemy crit can straight up put you in an unwinnable situation.

One skill in FE is learning how to calculate risks like that and mitigate them. People will avoid taking engagements with enemies that have crit rates higher than 3% on ironman runs.

But they weren't competing with one another. If you're wondering why collapsed its probably in the sales data and the rampant piracy of the DS. Dawn of Radiance and Radiant Dawn made the transition to consoles whereas AW didn't. And it probably would have died if Awakening wasn't such a smash hit since Shadow Dragon and Mystery didn't do well either (also on the DS and also victims of rampant piracy).

As someone who loves both JRPGs and Strategy games, I have long felt like the SRPG is just a cursed genre that is inherently unsolvable. Either the RPG mechanics take so much prescience that positioning and tactics barely matter, or the tactics take so much prescience that building up your units with RPG mechanics just feels like time wasting filler.

Not counting the chapter 4 boss, the highest crit rate in the first 4 chapters is 6%. The lowest Dodge any of the units you get in that time has is 4, so a 2% crit rate at worst. The chapter 4 boss has 11% with his Steel lance, and is supposed to be the first serious threat you face.

Anon, stop trying to put it in a box, make it "be" something. Fire Emblem is Fire Emblem. I've played Disgaea and I've played roguelikes and it's not like either.
The core idea of FE is that you recruit an army, build a team out of your favorites, and play through the campaign. Some players reset, some don't. It's up to you. Both pose their own challenges. There is also the memewheel in the newer games (per-chapter allowance of scuffed save states basically).
But again, the experience is about raising your dudes and playing the maps, that's it. You can add on your personal rules after that. If you don't like getting keked by crits, learn the battle calculations. FE math is remarkably consistent across 35 years and you could fit the key battle calculations on a napkin. It's one of the things that makes the series unique, the fact that you can calculate how the battle will go with information on the screen.

Scouts can move much more than other class. Their purpose is to scout for enemies, capture objectives and rescue downed allies. Their semi-auto rifles make them bad at interception during enemy phases, so they are not meant to hold a position defensively. The only times you face enemies with displayed crit chances are if you're using a luklet (inherently accepting the risk of a unit), the enemy has a killer weapon (knowledge that you have and can work around, you shouldn't let enemies with killer weapons get a chance to attack), or the enemy is a boss/unit type with high crit (can work around it by attacking outside of counterattack range, using skills to gain crit avoid, guaranteed blocks, etc.). If an enemy manages to crit you and it's not a same turn reinforcement (which the good FEs avoid) 99% of the time it is an issue with your strategy that led to the unit being exposed to a crit.

Advanced Wars has more macro level strategy beyond just the tactical gameplay, which may make it too complex for a broader audience. Fire Emblem is simpler overall, and games that succeed tend to be simple. Also, Fire Emblem got more popular once it started leaning into character customization and romance, which appeals more to RPG fans and women.

Fire Emblem just appeals to a wider market. A new Advanced Wars would need to do something to appeal to a new market rather than just people who are already fans of Advanced Wars.

Fates has cheapass bronze weapons that give +10 dodge just for equipping them. Both games give you +dodge for pairing up. Engage has engravings, weapons, and effects that nullify crits or damage outright. I'm sure 3H has some anti-crit shit too, and I know it has that battalion that just completely turns off damage.

The only reason you'd get crit in a modern FE is either a same-turn moving reinforcement pulled some bullshit or you're just not looking at stats and/or don't know how critical rate works and how to mitigate (skill issue).

To be fair, you don't have any of that stuff for the first four chapters, and you can face anywhere from 1-7% crit on those maps.

On the subject of crit chance, I'm actually playing Thracia right now, and I only now realized that Thracia only uses 1/2 luck for its dodge formula, meaning that even with capped luck, you can only mitigate up to 10% crit, otherwise you need to use a crusader scroll to nullify them.

On the whole, people do not like permanent death in RPGs. I hate to say it like this, but it also had something for many different players with an interest in FE. Not quite "something for everyone," but pretty close. It also put an enormous emphasis on character development while also making permadeath optional. Fire Emblem has much more focus on the individual characters because they themselves move and attack. The COs in AW just sit at presumably the HQ and command the army. There's a lot of other movement tech to take advantage of if you want to speed through battles. Scouts are a big part of it still but not solely the solution (in many battles). It's cool to combo APC movement, Direct Command, and scouts to get insane distances in a single turn. Direct command lets a character drag along others as part of their movement but doesn't cost the other characters their movement. So you could use a scout to drag a slower class really far and then let the unit of that slower but more powerful class have a fresh turn of movement to get the job done.

I play Fire Emblem because each unit is a character and if they die they are gone for the rest of the game. I would be willing to play Advance Wars if each unit type was only available once and if they died you could never get another. One infantry, one tank and so on. Engage by comparison just more or less released and fell off the map. No one is talking about any character or plot point seriously or even memeing on that. The most you get when people talk about Engage is "gameplay is so gud it cured my depression and my cancer!1!", yet...no one really discusses the gameplay. No one is putting out some wild Emblem-character combo or sharing map-breaker strats. It's just "gaemplay gud" with no real elaboration.
